FOR EMPLOYERS
Hiring of French teachers made easier with the use of DELF/DALF certification
This guide is intended to help those responsible for hiring teachers for French programs in school districts in British Columbia.
Are you looking to hire teachers for your French Immersion and Core French programs? This easy-to-use guide, produced by the Office of Francophone and Francophile Affairs (OFFA), will help you determine the level of French of potential candidates.
How can you interpret the mention of the DELF/DALF certificate on a candidate’s resume?
The Diplôme d’études en langue française (DELF) and Diplôme approfondi de langue française (DALF) communicate the language proficiency level of that candidate.
What is the DELF/DALF certificate?
- An internationally recognized certification
- Assesses French as a second language skills including listening, speaking, reading and writing
- Based on the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) to which the pedagogy of second language programs in British Columbia is aligned
Did you know...
Did you know that many universities in British Columbia and Canada that offer French teacher education programs and/or certifying practicums in French select candidates based on their DELF/DALF certification?
For example, at UVic, teacher candidates wishing to do a practicum in French Immersion schools must have successfully completed the B2 level. Shown here are the recommended levels of French for teacher education programs at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV, UBC and UBC-Okanagan:
What are the benefits of using the DELF/DALF certification for your school board during the hiring process?
- Ability to recognize a candidate’s language skills and competency at a glance
- Effective evaluation process
- Standardized application evaluations
- Consistency with teacher education program recommendations in the province and many other institutions across Canada
In its Final Report: Canada-wide Consultation, the Canadian Association of Immersion Professionals (ACPI) suggests that school boards consider offering DELF/DALF to teachers so that they can be accredited.
