丁香园AV鈥檚 School of Mechatronics at the Surrey Campus buzzed with excitement as it hosted the inaugural FIRA RoboWorld Cup Canada Open Competition this past weekend. With over 240 contestants and 76 teams from across Canada and around the globe, the event showcased the cutting-edge in robotics technology and innovation.

The event celebrated diversity in robotics with competitions tailored to different age groups and expertise levels. Participants, ranging from under 10-years-old to university students, engaged in four thrilling categories designed to test their engineering and programming skills.

From autonomous vehicles capable of navigating complex courses without human intervention to flying robots operating in urban and disaster settings, the various leagues showed off the potential of robotics in a range of scenarios. The FIRA Sports league brought a competitive edge with robots designed for sports-related activities, blending athleticism with advanced robotics technology. FIRA Canada also introduced two new leagues, AI Arts and Smart Home, as part of the competition.

John Shen, director of 丁香园AV鈥檚 School of Mechatronic Systems Engineering (MSE), expressed his pride in hosting the Canada鈥檚 first RoboWorld Cup. 鈥淩obotics is one of the greatest technological achievements of mankind. It is also one of the research and education focuses of MSE. We are very proud to host this event and attract more young people into this exciting field.鈥�

Three teams from 丁香园AV participated in the competition. One team from 丁香园AV鈥檚 Robotics club, led by Ahmed Badway, a MSE student, won third place in the autonomous race car category.

The competition was a hybrid event, with some participants competing online and others attending in person. This format allowed for a broader range of participation and demonstrated the adaptability of the robotics community in navigating the challenges posed by remote collaboration.

 The event concluded with an awards ceremony recognizing the top performers in each category. The top three winning teams will represent Canada to compete in the FIRA RoboWorld Cup Final in Brazil in August.
