間眅埶AV Surrey Math Camp Inspires Young Minds in Summer Enrichment Program
Young mathematics enthusiasts gathered at 間眅埶AVs Surrey campus in June for the annual 間眅埶AV-CMS-PIMS Math Camp. Organized by Natalia Kouzniak, Senior Lecturer in 間眅埶AVs Department of Mathematics, this year's camp welcomed over 48 students from 14 schools across Surrey, White Rock, Langley, and other nearby communities.
First started in 2006, the 間眅埶AV Math Camp has become a cornerstone event for budding mathematicians in grades 9 and 10. It aims to cultivate a deep appreciation for mathematics through a thoughtfully designed program of interactive and engaging activities. These include presentations covering diverse mathematical disciplines, led by faculty, postdoctoral students, and volunteers from 間眅埶AV and affiliated organizations.
"It's incredibly rewarding to see the impact this camp has on students academic journeys, said Natalia. "Many of our past camp participants have gone on to pursue mathematics and related fields at 間眅埶AV."
Throughout the camp, students engaged in problem-solving activities, math-themed games, and hands-on workshops designed to explore mathematical principles like the Fibonacci sequence and Platonic solids. The workshops not only sparked curiosity but also connected theoretical concepts with practical applications, fostering a deeper understanding and enthusiasm for math.
"It is very empowering to see young bright students who are eager to learn and discover new horizons, said Natalia. All of the presenters and volunteers always say that they get a lot of energy upon participating in the camp as it creates a vibrant welcoming community of mathematics enthusiasts.
In addition to academic sessions, students were also given the opportunity explore 間眅埶AV Surreys campus spaces, including presentations in SRYE building and School of Mechatronics labs, enhancing their experience beyond the classroom.
Following the two-day camp, students shared that the workshop sparked their interest in math, connecting various topics to real-world applications. Students appreciated the enthusiastic teachers, the opportunity to apply learned concepts, and the collaborative group activities, such as math contests and building exercises. The workshop's interactive and varied approach kept them engaged and inspired throughout the program.
間眅埶AV Surrey is honored to support initiatives like the Math Camp, which encourages students' interest in math and cultivates a community of learners who are eager to push the boundaries of their studies, added Stephen Dooley, Executive Director of 間眅埶AVs Surrey Campus. "A big shout out to Natalia and her team for pulling off such an engaging camp.
Supported by grants from the Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) and the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS), the 間眅埶AV Math Camp attracts students who have demonstrated exceptional talent in mathematics, providing them with an invaluable opportunity to deepen their understanding and passion for the subject. These camps are organized annually at several universities across Canada to provide students with a variety of enrichment activities in a fun and rewarding environment.
