Doctor of Philosophy in Sustainable Energy Engineering

Overview

The doctor of philosophy (PhD) in sustainable energy engineering (SEE), offered through the Faculty of Applied Sciences, is a research-intensive program that has a primary emphasis on the PhD thesis.

The program aims to offer a unique ecosystem for advanced research in sustainable energy engineering. Through training in formal coursework and hands-on research, SEE graduates will be capable of working with integrity to invent, improve, design and deploy sustainable clean energy technologies addressing the clean energy needs for now and the future.

Candidates will develop a strong aptitude for research and exceptional quantitative, analytical, and design skills in areas such as sustainable harvesting, conversion, storage, distribution, utilization, transition, and management of energy and environmental resources.

¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Requirements

Applicants must satisfy the University admission requirements as stated in Graduate General Regulations 1.3 in the ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Calendar. For admission to the doctor of philosophy (PhD) in mechatronic systems engineering program, a student must have a master's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, mechatronics engineering or a related field, and have submitted evidence of capability to undertake substantial original research.

Academic Requirements Within The Graduate General Regulations

All graduate students must satisfy the academic requirements that are specified in the  (residence, course work, academic progress, supervision, research competence requirement, completion time, and degree completion), as well as the specific requirements for the program in which they are enrolled, as shown above.

Program Requirements

This program consists of course work, a qualifying examination, and a thesis for a minimum of 33 units. Students may take additional courses to correct any deficiencies in their background upon approval of their supervisor. If the subject matter of a listed course has been previously completed with graduate credit, the course may not be completed again for credit.

Supervision

A supervisory committee must be established for PhD students at MSE. The minimum composition for the supervisory committee consists of the supervisor (or co-supervisors) and at least one committee member chosen in consultation with the student. The committee member must be a faculty member, adjunct professor or research associate at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV. A suitably qualified individual may be eligible to serve as an additional committee member.

Tuition 

The PhD program is a regular program, students pay a specified tuition per term regardless the number of units they are enrolled in.

Optional Industrial Internship

Students in the PhD program may complete an optional internship course of paid practical experience in an appropriate industrial setting to complement their academic studies. The internship will appear on the student's transcript, but does not count towards the student's CGPA and course requirements for the degree. Students require a pre-approval from both their supervisor and the graduate program chair in order to apply for the internship.
