Areas of interest
Raphael is a Quaternary geologist and paleolimnologist. During his doctoral studies he focussed on Late Quaternary paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental reconstructions based on cosmogenic nuclides and lake sediments on the Balkan Peninsula and Siberia. After completing his PhD (Dr. rer. nat.) he started a post-doctoral position at the Alfred-Wegener-Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (Bremerhaven, Germany) investigating sediments beneath the Ekström Ice Shelf in Antarctica. He then conducted research at the Max-Planck-Institute for the Science of Human History (Jena, Germany). Back at the University of Cologne he reconstructed the Late Quaternary paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental history of Lake Taymyr in central Arctic Siberia.
Since April 2021 Raphael is postdoctoral research fellowship recipient funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). During his 2-years stay he will focus on the glacial history of the Fraser Lowland. He will test a geochemical approach to correlate a series of sediment cores extending to at least MIS 4 from the Port Moody area. It shall be tested, if the bulk geochemical signature of each depositional unit can be used to correlate regional archives. This way the cores potential to represent a regional reference record will be evaluated.
