Natural hazards science communication - Practical applications in BC, Canada

Although British Colombia is affected by a wide range of natural hazards, there is no comprehensive system to monitor or communicate information about these events. This knowledge is particularly important as we aim to help communities become more resilient to these hazards. To address this problem, my project aims to develop effective methods to engage and communicate with the general public. This research will analyze similar case studies from other countries (e.g., New Zealand, Taiwan) faced with similar natural hazards. Initial work will focus on a participatory model with diverse communities such as schools, scientists and inhabitants surrounding the Mt. Meager complex, particularly Pemberton and Mt. Currie. With these strategies, we hope to design a prototype that is truly useful for different audiences within BC and more broadly across Canada.
