Reconstructing a long-term history of past Tropical Cyclone events in the western North Pacific.

Every year on average 40 tropical storms batter the western North Pacific causing loss of life and damage to infrastructure. Yet, our understanding of these storms is limited to the last 75 years of recorded instrument data. My research will involve using geochemical proxies, grainsize, microfossil, and stratigraphical correlations to investigate geologic records from coastal ponds found on the western North Pacific islands to identify prehistoric tropical cyclones. This research aims to deepen our understanding of the frequency, track, and intensity of tropical cyclones in the western North Pacific.
