French Language Requirement

In addition to the academic and admission requirements, all candidates applying to the Professional Development Program (PDP) or Professional Linking Program (PLP) French Module at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV must demonstrate an appropriate level of French language competency.

Applicants to the PDP and PLP French module must send proof of French-language proficiency, including one of the following:

  • Official results of an internationally accepted French competency exam (ie: DELF-DALF, TEF) to educprog@sfu.ca

PDP/PLP ¶¡ÏãÔ°AVs Office will determine if the documentation provided fulfills the French language requirement.

DELF-DALF Exam 

The DELF (diplôme d'études en langue française) / DALF (Diplôme approfondi de langue française) exams assess and certify French language proficiency.

There are 3 official DELF-DALF exam sessions (tout public) per year in Canada, generally in March, June and November.  Please note that not all sessions or exams are offered at every exam centre.  Please check the dates and make sure you take the exam in time to complete your program application. Candidates receive a certificate of their DELF-DALF exam results between 2 to 6 weeks after the exam.  The diplomas take about 6 months. 

DELF-DALF Exam Centre at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV

¶¡ÏãÔ°AV's DELF-DALF Exam Centre offers two exam sessions per year, in March and November.

DELF-DALF Results

For candidates taking the exam at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV, the results will be sent directly to the PDP/PLP ¶¡ÏãÔ°AVs office.

Candidates who have taken the DELF-DALF exam elsewhere must send a copy of their diploma or results to educprog@sfu.ca. We may need to see the original, in which case you can bring or send it to the Office of Francophone and Francophile Affairs (OFFA) and it will be returned to you.

Candidates taking the exam at the Alliance française in Vancouver can give permission to the exam centre to send the results directly to OFFA at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV. In order to do this, candidates must send an email to Valentin Morin (vmorin@alliancefrancaise.ca) requesting the exam centre to send the results to OFFA at educprog@sfu.ca. 

All results received by OFFA will be submitted to the PDP/PLP ¶¡ÏãÔ°AVs office.

DEADLINE for DELF-DALF exam results for the September intake:

  • It is highly recommended to take the exam as early as possible to complete your application.
  • If you apply for early admission (by November 30), it is recommended to take the exam in November. You should expect to receive a decision by late February.
  • If you take the exam in March, you can expect to receive a decision before or by the end of April.
  • If you take the exam in June, your application will be considered if there are spots remaining. Otherwise, your application will be put on the waitlist.

Minimum language requirements for admission to the PDP and PLP French Modules at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV

The following are the minimum language requirements for admission to the PDP and PLP French Modules at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV, and are also used in determining the placements of practicums:

*  PPS ¶¡ÏãÔ°AVs Office will determine if your supporting documents provided fulfill the French language requirement. 

NOTE - The minimum requirements for other universities or institutions may differ.  Please check with your institution.
  • For the DELF B1, if you took the exam prior to September 2022, an overall passing grade of 50% with a minimum score of 15/25 for each component of the exam is required for admission to the PDP French Module at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV.  For DELF B1 exams taken in September 2022 or later, a minimum score of 12/25 will be accepted for each component of the exam.  For the DELF B2 and the DALF C1, an overall passing grade of 50% with a minimum score of 5/25 for each component of the exam is required for admission to the PDP French Module.
  • In the elementary and secondary Core French programs, student-teachers typically teach a French class and all other subjects in English. In elementary and secondary immersion programs and in the programme francophone (elementary and secondary), student-teachers typically teach all subjects in French. 
  • The results indicate your level of language proficiency in relation to the school placements in the French program. If you are admitted, you will be offered a spot in a level only if you are eligible. For example, if you achieved the level of French for elementary FSL, you will only be offered a spot in that level if you meet all the academic and other requirements for elementary.

¶¡ÏãÔ°AV to the PDP and PLP French Modules

  • Proof of French-language proficiency are not indicative of your acceptance to the PDP/PLP French module.  Proficiency in French is only one of the admission requirements for the French Module.
  • You must satisfy all requirements and submit a complete application.  Decisions are possible only for complete applications. Once the PDP/PLP ¶¡ÏãÔ°AVs Committee has made a decision regarding your file, an official letter with their final decision will be mailed to you.
  • If you did not submit proof of French-language proficiency and you received an offer of admission, this means that you are eligible for the English module.  If you would like to be considered for the French module, you must submit proof of your French-language proficiency and give up your spot in the English module.
