DEPARTMENT TRANSFER REQUIREMENTS

Students who wish to join the Department of Mathematics must first transfer into the Faculty of Science.

Please find the Faculty of Science admission requirements here.

Students who wish to declare a minor in the Department of Mathematics do not need to transfer to the Faculty of Science. In some cases, students completing a double major/honours program may declare a Department of Mathematics major/honours program without joining the Faculty of Science.

If you have any questions, please contact the Math Undergraduate Advisor.

STANDARD ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

To internally transfer to the Department of Mathematics as a major or joint major, students must satisfy the following:

  • Complete all the required lower division courses with an average of C = 2.00 GPA (the joint major program requires this GPA in each of the MATH, MACM, and CMPT categories).
  • Students must not achieve lower than the required grade in any of the program courses.
  • Students are on good academic standing. If they have taken upper division courses, both their cumulative and program upper division GPA must be at least 2.0 (the joint major program requires this GPA in each of the upper division MATH, MACM, and CMPT categories).
  • Students who use more than 3 repeats reduce their chances of being admitted.

If there are any other issues on an academic record that suggest a student may struggle to complete the program, the application may be denied.

MAJOR AND JOINT MAJOR PROGRAMS

Standard ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Requirements

To internally transfer to the Department of Mathematics as a major or joint major, students must satisfy the following:

  • Students complete all the required lower division courses with an average subject GPA of 2.00 across MATH and MACM coursework. A minimum subject GPA of 2.40 is required for CMPT coursework.
  • Students must not achieve lower than the required grade in any of the program courses;
  • Students are on good academic standing. If they have taken upper division courses, both their
    cumulative and program upper division GPA must be at least 2.0 (the joint major program requires this GPA in each of the upper division MATH, MACM, and CMPT categories);
  • Students who use more than 3 repeats reduce their chances of being admitted.

If there are any other issues on an academic record that suggest a student may struggle to complete the program, the application may be denied.

Early ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Requirements:

  • We sometimes approve students who have completed as few as 3-4 MATH/MACM courses, but only if grades are in the A- to A+ range in first attempts at courses. If applying for early admission to the MACM joint major program, these high grades should be split between the MATH and CMPT subjects.
  • The earlier you request admission, the higher your grades need to be. For example, if you are applying with just 3 courses completed, the grades should be A or higher. If you are applying with 4-5 courses completed, the grades can be a little lower (B+ and up). If you don't meet these standards, please apply under the "Standard ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Requirements" category.
  • We assess early admission requests on a case-by-case basis.
    • Please note that students outside the Faculty of Science are not always eligible for early admission.
    • Please note that inconsistent grades often result in an early admission request being denied (e.g., a student with A grades in two required courses and C- grades in two required courses).

HONOURS PROGRAMS

To internally transfer to the Department of Mathematics as a honours student, the following must be satisfied:

Students must be eligible to join the corresponding major program and must also satisfy the reqiurements below:

  • Students finish lower division program requirements with a 3.0 program and cumulative GPA.
  • If students have taken upper division courses, both the upper division program GPA and upper division cumulative GPA must be 3.0.
  • Students who use more than 3 repeats reduce their chances of being admitted.
  • If there are any other issues on an academic record that suggest a student may struggle to complete the program, the application may be denied.

We sometimes approve students who have not yet completed the lower division requirements, if both the program and cumulative GPAs are 3.5 or higher. We assess these requests on a case-by-case basis.

You can view program options and course requirements here.
