doctoral student in the Faculty of Health Sciences

I am an immigrant to Canada, was born and raised in the United Arab Emirates, and care about migrant justice, community engagement, and women's health.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?

I was connected to the IRIS project during my time in the MPH program in the Faculty of Health Sciences, and was fortunate to pursue PhD research that is nested within IRIS and continue working with and from the team.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?

I try to understand what immigrant women's access to healthcare looks like, and how it may look different for younger women, for people with precarious immigration status and migration journeys, and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?

I enjoy the independence offered by the PhD program, as well as the support provided by ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV's Community Engaged Research Initiative.

HAVE YOU BEEN THE RECIPIENT OF ANY MAJOR OR DONOR-FUNDED AWARDS? IF SO, PLEASE TELL US WHICH ONES AND A LITTLE ABOUT HOW THE AWARDS HAVE IMPACTED YOUR STUDIES AND/OR RESEARCH.

I am privileged to have received the Dr. Djavad Mowafaghian Doctoral Fellowship in Child Health in 2019, which provided me with incredibly valuable financial support that helped me better focus on my research and community engagement efforts in the first two years of my PhD. Most recently I received a CIHR Doctoral Research Award, which continues to provide me with both financial and research support.
