Public Health master's student in the Faculty of Health Sciences

I am a Lower Mainland local who enjoys baking, watching foreign films and TV shows, travelling to new countries, and exercising outdoors with friends!

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?

I was particularly drawn to the breadth of the MPH program offered by ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV, the outstanding professors in the Faculty of Health Sciences, and how students in the program are able to dip their toes into all aspects of public health, while still having the option to dive deeper into certain topics of their choosing.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?

I work and learn with professionals from diverse backgrounds to develop evidence-based interventions and programs that address the upstream causes of poor health outcomes among communities and populations, rather than just at an individual-level.

WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?

I particularly enjoyed being a part of a cohort, and the course-based nature of the MPH program -- both of which created opportunities to form strong connections with my classmates, despite spending our first year together entirely remote. I was able to get involved in extracurricular activities that I would not have otherwise known about or participated in had I not enrolled in the program, such as the Canadian Evaluation Society's student case competition, and being an executive member on my faculty's graduate caucus. The professors within our faculty have also been very receptive, flexible and supportive of our learning through this turbulent time.

HAVE YOU BEEN THE RECIPIENT OF ANY MAJOR OR DONOR-FUNDED AWARDS? IF SO, PLEASE TELL US WHICH ONES AND A LITTLE ABOUT HOW THE AWARDS HAVE IMPACTED YOUR STUDIES AND/OR RESEARCH.

I was a recipient of the 2021 Janes Corbett Community Health Practice award, which supported me during my summer practicum at a population and public health consulting firm. During my practicum, I contributed to a variety of research and community engagement projects that employed methodologies to build quality improvement strategies for health authorities and research organizations, and inform strategies to improve the health of different populations, including rural, remote, and/or Indigenous Canadian communities, and survivors of gender-based violence in war-torn, developing countries.
