- Individualized Interdisciplinary Studies in Graduate Studies
"There have been many opportunities for me to build community and get involved with different research projects at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV. There are so many incredible teams at the university doing a breadth of fascinating research and it is great to be in that environment."
Emily R. Blyth
Doctoral student in the Faculty of Health Sciences
I am a passionate researcher with a demonstrated history of working with community and integrating creative practice into how my projects seek to generate and share knowledge.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?
The interdisciplinary and community focused approaches in the Health Sciences faculty were greatly interesting to me and continue to enhance my work and experience with the school. ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV hopes to be "the engaged university" and that reflected the directions I hope to see my research take.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?
My project will work with a small focus group of less than 10 people to review mainstream and independent media (news) reports on police use of force (violence). Together, we will read these news reports and document how each 1) portrays police violence and 2) impacts readers who are statistically more likely to experience police violence. As police violence is a source of inequitable harm in Canada, we consider the ways that different reporting styles can be complacent in, extend, contribute to, call out, and even help rectify this issue.
WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?
There have been many opportunities for me to build community and get involved with different research projects at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV. There are so many incredible teams at the university doing a breadth of fascinating research and it is great to be in that environment.
HAVE YOU BEEN THE RECIPIENT OF ANY MAJOR OR DONOR-FUNDED AWARDS? IF SO, PLEASE TELL US WHICH ONES AND A LITTLE ABOUT HOW THE AWARDS HAVE IMPACTED YOUR STUDIES AND/OR RESEARCH.
The Graduate Dean's Entrance Scholarship. This scholarship has been major in allowing me to pursue my research while taking on work projects that feel most emergent and relevant to my process. It has been greatly beneficial in allowing me to be more selective with my research and teaching commitments which has allowed me to get involved with some exciting opportunities and incredible teams that align with my passions.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PROGRAM/POSTDOC POSITION TO SOMEONE STILL SEARCHING FOR A PROGRAM OR POSTDOC POSITION?
The Health Sciences program at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV is incredibly interdisciplinary and has a great amount of flexibility to support students on different research and learning journeys. The program administrators are fantastic and with a strong supervisory committee, it is likely you will have the freedom and support you need to achieve your specific academic goals.
