"I chose ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV because I respected what I heard (from afar) about BC's public health initiatives during the early part of the pandemic and knew that learning here locally would be important. Secondly, the MPH program at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV is one of the few Canadian programs to be accredited. And finally, the focus on social justice in this program really drew me. I'm so grateful I was chosen to study here!"
Elisabeth (Beth) Clark
Public Health master's student in the Faculty of Health Sciences
After years at educational and non-profit institutions, a personal experience led me to shift career paths towards health & wellbeing. I've worked as a certified health coach with two tech-based companies, using innovative software to support our clients. I wanted to pursue further studies in public health to support my health coaching work and also to open up further doors in the health field.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?
I chose ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV because I respected what I heard (from afar) about BC's public health initiatives during the early part of the pandemic and knew that learning here locally would be important. Secondly, the MPH program at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV is one of the few Canadian programs to be accredited. This will open doors for me as I pursue work on either side of the border. And finally, the focus on social justice in this program really drew me. I'm so grateful I was chosen to study here!
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?
The MPH program is a generalist program that prepares us for one of many different avenues available in the public health field. Since I have several different interests and passions, I appreciate the wide breath of knowledge gained in this program, from global health to social determinants of health to epidemiology. No matter what specific path I choose ahead, I know I will receive a well-rounded educational foundation.
WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?
I appreciate that we are able to tailor our assignments to topics that we are passionate about. It helps to expand our learning and knowledge in those areas as well as develop the practical tools (e.g., literature review, survey design, interviewing) we will need in our future work.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PROGRAM/POSTDOC POSITION TO SOMEONE STILL SEARCHING FOR A PROGRAM OR POSTDOC POSITION?
If you are looking for a robust educational program with a supportive environment and an equity/social justice orientation, then the MPH program at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV would be an ideal fit!
