"I enjoy learning from all of the very knowledgeable and engaging faculty here at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV. Additionally, the small class sizes allow for many intellectually stimulating and eye-opening discussions to take place."
Medha Amarnath Nair
Clinical Psychology master's student in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
I am a Master's student in the Clinical Neuropsychology track of the Clinical Psychology program at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV. I graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Science in 2022, majoring in Cognitive Systems. I study under the supervision of Dr. Molly Cairncross in the Concussion Outcomes, Recovery and TECH interventions (CORTECH) lab. Outside of school, I love to spend time going on walks outside, baking, and reading.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?
I chose to come to ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV for many reasons! One of these reasons is because of the excellent reputation of the clinical training and research skills provided by the program. I was also excited by the opportunity to work with talented and amazing people, including my supervisor, Dr. Molly Cairncross, whose research program aligned greatly with my interests. Moreover, I have lived in the Greater Vancouver area for most of my life and love every bit of it, and so continuing my graduate studies here seemed like a natural choice.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?
My research focuses on examining factors contributing to the development of persistent post-concussion symptoms. While many people recover relatively quickly following concussion, some continue to experience physical, cognitive, and emotional symptoms for months after their injury. These symptoms can be disabling for individuals and prevent them from engaging in activities they enjoyed pre-injury. My research aims to understand cognitive factors, specifically, attentional biases, that contribute to the persistence of symptoms following concussion.
WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?
I enjoy learning from all of the very knowledgeable and engaging faculty here at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV. Additionally, the small class sizes allow for many intellectually stimulating and eye-opening discussions to take place. My cohort has also been so friendly and supportive, and it's awesome to be surrounded by many people who want to see you succeed.
HAVE YOU BEEN THE RECIPIENT OF ANY MAJOR OR DONOR-FUNDED AWARDS? IF SO, PLEASE TELL US WHICH ONES AND A LITTLE ABOUT HOW THE AWARDS HAVE IMPACTED YOUR STUDIES AND/OR RESEARCH.
I am very grateful to have received the SSHRC Canada Graduate Scholarship - Master's award and the Special Graduate Entrance Scholarship in 2022. These awards have allowed me to focus on my studies and research activities, including to travel and present my research at conferences.
