Overview of the Undergraduate Programs in Statistics

Statistics programs include both non-statistics and statistics courses. Statistics courses train students in the fundamentals of data analysis, statistical computing, the communication of statistical concepts, probability theory, the design of experiments, and the understanding of surveys. Typical progression through these courses is illustrated in this flow chart for the Statistics major and this flow chart for the Statistics minor, and details about each course are available in our course outlines.

Statistics Major And Honours Programs

Our major and honours programs are designed for students seeking in-depth knowledge of statistical methods and the skill to modify or develop methods to tackle challenging quantitative problems. These programs are tailored to reflect the current employment market and to provide students with an up-to-date, solid foundation for a career as a professional statistician or further studies in statistics at the graduate level.

Students may also combine study and work through ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV's co-operative education program or research assistanceships. Such experience with solving real-world problems complements classroom learning and provides a head start when establishing a career.

Frequently asked questions

Program requirements

  • Program requirements can change over time. To find out your individual requirements, you need to know your program and your requirement term. You can find this information on your advising transcript. In particular, in the section on the front page labelled "STUDENT PROGRAMS", you will find the programs in which you are enrolled (e.g., STAT major, CMPT minor) and the requirement term ("Req. Term") for each. The requirement term specifies the calendar (year and term) that describes your program requirements. E.g., if your requirement term is 1174, you are subject to the program requirements outlined in the summer 2017 calendar. However, you have the option of instead satisfying current program requirements.
  • For formal requirements of the Statistics major and honours programs, see the ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Calendar

Important changes to the Statistics major and honours program requirements

  • In Spring 2017, we added two new required courses (STAT 180 and STAT 240). Students with requirement terms of 1171 and later must complete these courses. Students with earlier requirement terms may take these courses as electives if they choose.
  • Students with requirement terms of Summer 2018 or later are no longer required to complete a minor (or satisfy the alternative requirement of 12 upper division units using courses other than MATH, MACM, or STAT courses, which we introduced in Spring 2017). Instead, they must simply complete 13 additional upper division units (to satisfy university requirements) using any upper division courses in which they are eligible to enrol other than STAT 302, STAT 305, or STAT 403. (Note that a minor program, which consists of at least 14 upper division units, satisfies this requirement.) If your requirement term is prior to 1184, you may choose to satisfy either this new requirement or the requirement described in the calendar corresponding to your requirement term. Note, however, that we continue to recommend that students complete a minor program.
  • In Summer 2018, we increased the flexibility of our upper division requirements, changing the requirement "12 units in 400-level STAT courses (excluding STAT 403)" to "12 units in upper division STAT courses (excluding STAT 302, STAT 305, and STAT 403)". As a result, students may now count STAT 300W and STAT 380 toward these required 12 units. If your requirement term is prior to 1184, you may choose to satisfy either the new or the old requirement.
  • If you follow the new requirements, your Academic Progress Report (APR) might be inaccurate.
  • If you have questions about these changes or to confirm your program requirements and to report inaccuracies in your APR, please contact the Statistics Advisor (statadv@sfu.ca).

Continuation requirements

  • To remain in the Statistics major program, students need to maintain at least a 2.25 GPA in STAT, MATH, MACM, and CMPT courses taken at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV.
  • To remain in the Statistics honours program, students need to maintain at least a 3.0 GPA in STAT, MATH, MACM, and CMPT courses taken at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV.

Statistics Minor Program

Our minor program targets students who want a working knowledge of standard methods of analyzing data. These students' main interest is usually in another discipline, but they recognize the value of statistical methods in their current or future work.

Frequently asked questions

Program description

STAT Minor requirements for students whose major program requires STAT 302, STAT 305, STAT 350, or ECON 333

Please be aware that ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV policy prohibits students from applying upper division courses toward more than one program. Therefore, if your major program requires STAT 302, STAT 305, STAT 350, or ECON 333 (henceforth called "Statistics 2"), you may not use the units from this course toward both your major and the STAT minor. However, you may use these courses to satisfy the Statistics 2 requirement of the STAT minor. In this case, you will need to complete 15 alternative upper division STAT units (or accepted substitutes), one of which could be -- but is not required to be -- a second Statistics 2 course. Because of the overlap between STAT 302, STAT 305, and ECON 333, we recommend taking only one of these courses.

Example 1. You are a HSCI major and have taken STAT 305. You may not use the associated 3 units toward the 15 upper division units required for the STAT minor. Instead, you may do one of the following:

  1. (Recommended) Complete 15 upper division units using upper division STAT courses other than STAT 302, STAT 305, or STAT 350. Up to 4 of the 15 units may come from accepted substitute courses.
  2. Complete STAT 302 or STAT 350 and 12 units from upper division STAT courses other than STAT 302, STAT 305, or STAT 350. Up to 4 of the 12 units may come from accepted substitute courses.
  3. Complete ECON 333 and 11 units from upper division STAT courses other than STAT 302, STAT 305, or STAT 350.

Example 2. You are an ECON major and have taken ECON 333. You may not use the associated 4 units toward the 15 upper division units required for the STAT minor. Instead, you may do one of the following:

  1. (Recommended) Complete 15 upper division units using upper division STAT courses other than STAT 302, STAT 305, or STAT 350. Up to 4 of the 15 units may come from accepted substitute courses.
  2. Complete STAT 302, STAT 305, or STAT 350 and 12 units from upper division STAT courses other than STAT 302, STAT 305, or STAT 350. Up to 4 of the 12 units may come from accepted substitute courses.
