Physics master's student in the Faculty of Science

Tell us a little about yourself, including what inspires you to learn and continue in your chosen field

I joined ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV after receiving a Bachelor’s in Physics from McMaster University. At McMaster, I became excited about quantum information after taking an introductory quantum information course. In this course, I learned how quantum mechanics can be used to create useful technologies for computations and communications. Fascinated by what I learned, I was inspired to continue research into the development of these technologies and investigate how the principles of quantum mechanics can be put to use in concrete ways.

Why did you choose to come to ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?

Based on my interest in quantum information I heard about the work being carried out by Dr. Jennewein and Dr. Higgenbottom. After finding out these professors are conducting research at the cutting edge of quantum information technologies and learning about ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV’s supportive physics department it became a choice I could not refuse.

How would you describe your research or your program to a family member?

Quantum information is a field of quantum mechanics that uses qubits instead of classical bits to store information. The difference between bits and qubits is that classical bits take values between 0 and 1, while qubits take on a superposition of 0 and 1. This property allows for unique applications including more secure communication protocols. In this project, I will be working to use qubits products from Silicon T-Centers for long-distance quantum communication potentially involving satellites.

How have your courses, RA-ships, TA-ships, or non-academic school experiences contributed to your academic and/or professional development?

During my undergraduate, I joined the varsity fencing team. There I learned leadership and teamwork, both of which are necessary to be successful in research.

Have you been the recipient of any major or donor-funded awards? If so, please tell us which ones and a little about how the awards have impacted your studies and/or research

I have received the NSERC CGS-M award and am receiving an NSERC CREATE Quantum Computing Program Scholarship.
