"I was drawn to ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV by the world-class ecological research that occurs here. Being surrounded by interesting research and thoughtful people has made it a fun and inspiring environment to grow as a researcher."
Nico Munoz
Biological Science doctoral student in the Faculty of Science
I'm a biologist interested in understanding the ecological impacts of climate change and invasive species, with a particular interest in Pacific salmon. I also play guitar in an indie band and am overly into Star Wars.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?
I was drawn to ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV by the world-class ecological research that occurs here. I was a long-time fan of the research of my PhD supervisor, and being able to join the Earth to Ocean Research group was an opportunity I could not resist.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?
I study the novel ecological interactions that have emerged in Patagonia, southern Chile following the recent establishment of non-native Chinook salmon.
WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?
Being surrounded by interesting research and thoughtful people has made it a fun and inspiring environment to grow as a researcher. Also, the view!
HAVE YOU BEEN THE RECIPIENT OF ANY MAJOR OR DONOR-FUNDED AWARDS? IF SO, PLEASE TELL US WHICH ONES AND A LITTLE ABOUT HOW THE AWARDS HAVE IMPACTED YOUR STUDIES AND/OR RESEARCH.
I received an NSERC postgraduate scholarship at the beginning of my PhD, and the Weston Family scholarship in the final year of my PhD. Both of these awards were a major help in that they allowed me to focus on my research and make the most of my time here.
