¶¡ÏãÔ°AV

"Mr. Nazemi is an exceptional scholar with a love of learning. His passion for Earth Sciences is evident in everything he does, and his work ethic is impressive. There are few people better suited to assess the potential for underground storage of CO2 in the Lower Mainland, BC. Having Maziyar join our research team has been a great experience for everyone. He brings an energy to the room that is fun to be around and he is always up for social activities with the team. The world needs more Maziyars!"

Earth Sciences doctoral student in the Faculty of Science

I am a Ph.D. student in the Department of Earth Sciences working with Dr. Shahin Dashtgard. I commenced my Ph.D. program in Fall 2021. Before coming to ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV, I completed my MSc in 2019 in Petroleum Geology at the University of Tehran, Iran, and completed my BSc in Petroleum Engineering in 2013. After graduating with my MSc, I received a position as Petroleum Geologist at Pars Petro Zagros Engineering & Services company (PPZ), Tehran, Iran. While working at PPZ, I was fortunate to get involved in several industrial projects in the field of geology which led me to broaden my knowledge and strengthen it for the field which I am passionate about. That valuable opportunity made me determined to pursue my Ph.D. and work with Dr. Dashtgard who is an amazing and supportive supervisor to work with. When I'm not thinking about research, I'm likely doing something active outside.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?

¶¡ÏãÔ°AV is a well-known international university with a high reputation that provides fantastic support for the students, and it has a friendly community that encourages the students to be involved in it. I believe that my study at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV can assist me to be an effective member of my society to reach my academic and personal goals. Moreover, I believe doing a Ph.D. in the Department of Earth Sciences at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV is a praiseworthy experience for me because it gives me the chance to learn new advanced techniques and skills in association with the field of my study and that is incredible!

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?

My research is mainly focused on the 3D reconstruction of the Georgia Basin and the Potential for Carbon Capture Sequestration in the Lower Mainland, British Columbia.

WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?

I enjoy the opportunities ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV has provided particularly, the opportunity to network with other researchers across the world which I believe is one of the most important parts of science and also helps with personal advancement. Last but not least, the research atmosphere, talented professors, and good friends that I think I need to learn a lot from them.

HAVE YOU BEEN THE RECIPIENT OF ANY MAJOR OR DONOR-FUNDED AWARDS? IF SO, PLEASE TELL US WHICH ONES AND A LITTLE ABOUT HOW THE AWARDS HAVE IMPACTED YOUR STUDIES AND/OR RESEARCH.

I have been fortunate and grateful for receiving several honorable awards such as:
• Graduate Dean’s Entrance Scholarship
• Bert Henry Memorial Graduate Scholarship
• GPS Graduate Fellowship
• Petro-Canada Graduate Scholarship in Earth Sciences
They basically covered most of my living costs and research cost which is awesome!

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PROGRAM/POSTDOC POSITION TO SOMEONE STILL SEARCHING FOR A PROGRAM OR POSTDOC POSITION?

Ph.D. is a path to explore and exploit the potential in your ideas. Even if these ideas are not well-developed, many scholars are there to help you learn, and find the right questions to ask. You'll earn the joy of finding answers. My Ph.D. project is about the 3D reconstruction of the Georgia Basin and the Potential for Carbon Capture Sequestration in the Lower Mainland, British Columbia.
