"I appreciate the support and collaboration here at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV, most notably from my lab members and the Earth to Ocean (E2O) research group. I feel supported in my wellbeing as well as my research."
Claire Attridge
Biological Science master's student in the Faculty of Science
I am a first year Master’s student in Dr. Isabelle Côté’s lab in the Earth to Ocean (E2O) research group at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV. I grew up in Vancouver, but went to complete a BSc in Marine Biology at Dalhousie University on the East coast of Canada, after which I decided to come back to the West coast to start my MSc in Biological Sciences at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV. My research interests explore spatial and temporal trends in subtidal systems, with special focus on the population dynamics of kelp assemblages and their associated biological communities. I feel so much support from the amazing colleagues and mentors who have guided me along my academic path so far on both coasts, and I’m looking forward to many more years of research and scientific outreach.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?
I came to ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV because I was highly interested in the research of my supervisor Dr. Isabelle Côté and had also heard great things about the E2O research group.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?
I’ve managed to coerce all my friends and family into learning what kelps are! I tend to casually describe my research as ‘exploring how environmental impacts can create patterns of change in underwater communities over space and time’.
WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?
I appreciate the support and collaboration here at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV, most notably from my lab members and the Earth to Ocean (E2O) research group. It’s really the little things that count, like a professor taking the time to have a coffee with you, or a lab member sitting down for an hour to go over your presentation slides. I feel supported in my wellbeing as well as my research.
HAVE YOU BEEN THE RECIPIENT OF ANY MAJOR OR DONOR-FUNDED AWARDS? IF SO, PLEASE TELL US WHICH ONES AND A LITTLE ABOUT HOW THE AWARDS HAVE IMPACTED YOUR STUDIES AND/OR RESEARCH.
I was awarded the Special Graduate Entrance Scholarships (SGES) in Fall 2021. I greatly appreciate this funding, which served as a catalyst for my research in the first semester of my degree.
