"I enjoy the creativity and freedom of my graduate studies, and the chance to learn not only about my research, but about the breadth of different projects happening at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV. I also appreciate the support and guidance from my supervisor, committee members, and lab mates!"
Anita Poon
Biological Science master's student in the Faculty of Science
I am a Master's student working in collaboration with the Agassiz Research and Development Centre. I completed my undergrad in Biology at UBC. I am primarily based out in Agassiz where I conduct my research. In my free time, you can find me wheezing up a mountain or bent over a crochet hook.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?
I came to ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV to join Dr. Jenny Cory's lab and learn from her expertise in biological controls and ecology.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?
I am interested in the biological control potential of a disease-causing fungus towards soil-dwelling Elaterid beetle larvae for use in agricultural systems. We are working to understand the mechanism of protection that this fungus is providing for potato crops. We are examining a range of possible factors including insect mortality, behaviour, herbivory, microbiome, and plant defense responses.
WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?
I enjoy the creativity and freedom of my graduate studies, and the chance to learn not only about my research, but about the breadth of different projects happening at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV. I also appreciate the support and guidance from my supervisor, committee members, and lab mates!
HAVE YOU BEEN THE RECIPIENT OF ANY MAJOR OR DONOR-FUNDED AWARDS? IF SO, PLEASE TELL US WHICH ONES AND A LITTLE ABOUT HOW THE AWARDS HAVE IMPACTED YOUR STUDIES AND/OR RESEARCH.
I am very grateful to have been awarded Graduate Fellowships that have allowed me to focus on my studies and research.
