"The REM program provides me an opportunity to look at science holistically, something that I think is often lacking in research."
Maureen Nadeau
Resource and Environmental Management (REM) master's student in the
I live on sinixt, syilx, and ktunaxa territory, in what is commonly known as Nelson, BC. I am currently completing my first year as a master's student in Resource and Environmental Management - thesis stream. I obtained an undergraduate degree at UBC in Environmental Science in 2017. In my free time, you'll find me in the mountains on my bike or snowboard, or at home embroidering while my partner plays drums.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?
After my undergrad, I worked in both non-profit and government sectors. Within these roles, I found myself questioning many of the operations and finding inconsistencies with how or why work should be completed versus how it was actually being completed on the ground. My role with the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations, and Rural Development as an Authorization Specialist left me feeling ready to tackle these questions with more rigor. When debating where I would best be able to conduct my proposed research, I found that the REM program at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV had an incredible interdisciplinary approach that would allow me to explore meaningful social and natural science work.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?
My research focuses on equity and justice within large-scale land-use planning for wildlife recovery. I am working with the Okanagan Indian Band to implement their Wildlife Recovery Plan for the Southern mountain caribou. I will be specifically looking at the intersection of mechanized ski operation, caribou recovery, and various forms of governance.
WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?
I am enjoying the opportunity to connect my knowledge of natural science with justice and equity through social sciences. The REM program provides me an opportunity to look at science holistically, something that I think is often lacking in research.
HAVE YOU BEEN THE RECIPIENT OF ANY MAJOR OR DONOR-FUNDED AWARDS? IF SO, PLEASE TELL US WHICH ONES AND A LITTLE ABOUT HOW THE AWARDS HAVE IMPACTED YOUR STUDIES AND/OR RESEARCH.
