"Through new media, sculpture, installation, and video, I examine the psychic impact of cultural assimilation and naturalization, alongside issues of ecological and racial justice."
Josephine Lee
School for the Contemporary Arts doctoral student in the Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology
My name is Josephine Lee, and I am an interdisciplinary artist. My work is informed by a lifetime of movement throughout the United States and Canada. Through new media, sculpture, installation, and video, I examine the psychic impact of cultural assimilation and naturalization, alongside issues of ecological and racial justice. Within this framework, I complicate conditions of overlapping identity formations and examine how technological transformations connect directly to political power and social violence. Further, I look at how these technologies may be configured to enact cultural resilience, racial equity, and propose new and speculative orientations for our bodies and ecological futures.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?
I chose it for its practice-based doctoral program which enables me to deepen my artistic research practice, collaborate with other interdisciplinary scholars and artists, and receive mentorship from a diverse range of faculty.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?
Through artistic practice, I propose new ways of understanding how we can create more equitable, symbiotic futures. I focus on overlapping conditions of identity, power, and technology, and blend artistic mediums and practices to propose new ways of envisioning ourselves, our ecologies, and our humanity.
WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?
The space and capacity to engage with my process and research in deep and radical ways. The time, resources, and trust afforded to me by this program has enabled me to fully commit to my work.
