" The courses, projects and people I've interacted with have exposed me to ideas that are making my work better and more inclusive of different perspectives and methodologies."
Brett Gaylor
Interactive Art and Technology doctoral student in the Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology
I've been making documentaries about and with the Internet since the early 2000s. My feature Rip! A Remix Manifesto is about the early days of remix culture online and the ways that conflicted with copyright laws and intellectual property. I spent many years at the Mozilla Foundation working at building a healthy Internet where everyone could participate in online life. Along the way I began making interactive documentaries that use the "viewers" data to help tell the story - Do Not Track and Discriminator are examples of this type of documentary.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?
The Making Culture Lab was exciting as the place to house my research because it is home to many people practicing creative research. It's a new and exciting way for me to think about documentaries: making the work is the research, and it suits the kind of documentaries I like to make where the audience experiences the phenomenon that you explore in the work. It's also a place where people are studying decolonial methods. It has been a while since I've been in academia and I have a lot to learn. The courses, projects and people I've interacted with have exposed me to ideas that are making my work better and more inclusive of different perspectives and methodologies.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?
My research looks at how documentarians can use artificial intelligence within their work as a way to help people build critical literacy around artificial intelligence. I want people to experience A.I. to understand A.I.
WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?
Discovering creative research methods.
