"I enjoy being around a community of like-minded individuals. The ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV SCA has been a space where I can dedicate my time to taking classes that help me to grow in BOTH theory AND art practice."
Tin Gamboa
Interdisciplinary Arts master's student in the Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology
Tin Gamboa is a Filipina dance artist who resides as an uninvited guest on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tseil-Waututh First Nations. As a member of the diaspora who was born and raised in Manila, Philippines, till the age of 18, she is interested in understanding the body's positionality and relationality to other beings within time and space. Intrigued by Yolanda Covington-Ward's prompt to begin with the body as the centre, conduit, and catalyst for reflection, Tin delves into mundane gestures and stories to explore the realm of ethnographic choreography. She appreciates safe spaces for reflection on ideas and patterns imprinted on the body, in relation to larger societal frameworks. Tin is currently supplementing embodied understanding with theory and research as a Master of Fine Arts Candidate at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV, taking courses that fall within Contemporary Arts, Indigenous Studies, Urban Studies, and Anthropology.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?
I enjoy the self-directed nature of the fine arts programs at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV. Their Contemporary Arts department places importance in art practice, as much as they do theory. This way of melding mind and body is something I really appreciate in the Contemporary Arts department of ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?
- My research has a lot to do with "how we relate to others and place." - It is cultural work where the 'body' is the entry point for reflection and action. - I am pursuing this research to better hold space for individual and collective reflection on identity, positionality, and place.
WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?
I enjoy being around a community of like-minded individuals. The ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV SCA has been a space where I can dedicate my time to taking classes that help me to grow in BOTH theory AND art practice. I also greatly appreciate all the mentorship and valuable resources (library, studio space, tech.) that are available at the school.
