Publishing master's student in the Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology

I am a second-year graduate student in the Master of Publishing program. I am from "Victoria," BC, and I completed my BA in English and Pacific and Asian Studies at the University of Victoria. My pronouns are she/her.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?

I chose ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV specifically for their Master of Publishing (MPub) program, which is the only master's degree program in publishing in Canada.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?

My research is centred on zines and the zine community of the west coast of Canada as a publishing counterculture. I am particularly interested in exploring zines as a crucial alternative to mainstream publishing in giving space to and embodying marginalized communities.

WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?

Being in the MPub program has introduced me to and allowed me to explore many different aspects of publishing, and I am thankful for all of the connections I have made in the program and in the industry. I am also particularly enjoying being on campus at the Harbour Centre and working as a teaching assistant.

HAVE YOU BEEN THE RECIPIENT OF ANY MAJOR OR DONOR-FUNDED AWARDS? IF SO, PLEASE TELL US WHICH ONES AND A LITTLE ABOUT HOW THE AWARDS HAVE IMPACTED YOUR STUDIES AND/OR RESEARCH.

I am immensely grateful to have my research be funded by a SSHRC CGSM award and a CERi Graduate Fellowship, in addition to having received a BC Graduate Scholarship and a Dean's Graduate Fellowship last year.
