"Faculty have been incredibly supportive and encouraged me to explore new research interests that I never would have thought about had it not been for the wide range of fascinating topics discussed in class."
Catherine Jeffery
Communication master's student in the Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology
In my spare time, I enjoy reading fiction, playing tennis, and going on long walks around my neighbourhood. I also love visiting new places and trying new foods.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?
I chose ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV because of the Communication program's critical emphasis and amazing faculty. The ability to live and study in Vancouver was also a major draw for me, as I love the outdoors and being close to the ocean.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?
My research focuses on the ways that finance has become a key part of everyday life. My thesis project examines robo-advisors, which are mobile investing apps. I explore what users learn about financial markets through using these apps and how users talk about this in online discussion forums.
WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?
Even though I started my degree virtually, I have felt a strong sense of community with fellow students in my program. Getting to know people, even without seeing them in-person, has been really amazing. As well, faculty have been incredibly supportive and encouraged me to explore new research interests that I never would have considered otherwise.
HAVE YOU BEEN THE RECIPIENT OF ANY MAJOR OR DONOR-FUNDED AWARDS? IF SO, PLEASE TELL US WHICH ONES AND A LITTLE ABOUT HOW THE AWARDS HAVE IMPACTED YOUR STUDIES AND/OR RESEARCH.
It was my honour to receive a SSHRC-CGSM award this spring to support my studies. I feel extremely grateful to have received such a generous amount of funding, which has allowed me to focus on my academic activities.
