Economics doctoral student in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

Tell us a little about yourself, including what inspires you to learn and continue in your chosen field

I am an economist from Brazil who is passionate about using economic theory to analyze political institutions and how they have affected societies throughout history. I hope my research will help enhance our understanding of these institutions and their design, ultimately improving the welfare of societies in developing countries.

Why did you choose to come to ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?

¶¡ÏãÔ°AV’s renown as a research university and the amazing faculty at the Department of Economics.

How would you describe your research or your program to a family member?

Analyzing political institutions through the lenses of economic theory and determining how they affect societies throughout history.

What three (3) keywords would you use to describe your research?

Political Economy, Development Economics, Applied Microeconomics.

How have your courses, RA-ships, TA-ships, or non-academic school experiences contributed to your academic and/or professional development?

Have you been the recipient of any major or donor-funded awards? If so, please tell us which ones and a little about how the awards have impacted your studies and/or research

Throughout my program, I have received the Graduate Dean Entrance Scholarship, the Terry Heaps Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award, the Lang Wong Memorial Scholarship in Economics and the Peter Kennedy Memorial Graduate Fellowship. These awards have further motivated me to continue developing my skills as both a researcher and a teacher.

If you could dedicate your research to anyone (past, present and/or future), who would that be and why?

To my late grandfather, Mario Sergio de Castro Bandeira who stayed curious throughout his life and employed his knowledge as a hydraulic engineer to develop public projects which helped improve the living conditions of many people.
