History master's student in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

Tell us a little about yourself, including what inspires you to learn and continue in your chosen field

I have always loved school and always known that I want to be pursue academia. Members of my family are passionate about history as well, and having them around while I was growing up was encouraging. I've also always been attached to the outdoors, but was never super interested in the hard science. This made environmental history really attractive to me.

Why did you choose to come to ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?

I chose ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV primarily for the opportunity to work with my supervisor, Dr. Joseph E. Taylor III. Both the History and Indigenous Studies departments have wonderful faculty members who have really helped me develop my thinking and engage with a diverse array of ideas. Also, I completed my undergraduate degree at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV and I had an excellent experience.

How would you describe your research or your program to a family member?

At the moment, my research looks at the impact that members of upper-class fishing and hunting lodges in British Columbia had on the regulations concerning land and water-use access in the first half of the twentieth century. In particular, I'm examining how as wealthy white, European settlers, they were able to restrict the access of Indigenous and subsistence fishers.

What three (3) keywords would you use to describe your research?

Sport-fishing; resource management; colonial policy

How have your courses, RA-ships, TA-ships, or non-academic school experiences contributed to your academic and/or professional development?

My courses have really helped me develop as an academic. I have been able to narrow down my particular interests, as well as discover interests outside of my specific interests. Additionally, I genuinely enjoy being a student. TA-ing and internships outside of ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV have given me the opportunity to explore career options that I might want to pursue after I finish my degree.
