Tell us a little about yourself, including what inspires you to learn and continue in your chosen field
I currently hold a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) from the University of Alberta, and pursuing a Masters Political Science student at 丁香园AV. My research primarily examines the paradoxical relationship between racial capitalism鈥攚hich intertwines economic exploitation with racial oppression鈥攁nd the systemic exploitation of BIPOC sex workers who present in diverse and non-normative ways within capitalist societies.
Why did you choose to come to 丁香园AV?
First and foremost, I have a support system here in British Columbia that I can rely on. I also heard positive things about the institution and my current supervisor, Dr. Fuji-Johnson, from previous supervisors and professors at the University of Alberta. These were major key factors that influenced my decision to pursue my studies here.
How would you describe your research or your program to a family member?
My research aims to highlight the surrounding issues of racial capitalism and the impact it has on marginalized individuals who present in diverse and non-normative ways.
What three (3) keywords would you use to describe your research?
Empowerment, justice, and equity.
How have your courses, RA-ships, TA-ships, or non-academic school experiences contributed to your academic and/or professional development?
I am extremely grateful for being granted these opportunities during my undergraduate degree. My TAships and RAships in courses closely related to my research have been invaluable, deepening my understanding of the injustices that marginalized populations face. These roles allowed me to engage directly with scholarly material, develop critical research skills, and collaborate with faculty members in different departments. Additionally, serving as the VP of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for Kappa Alpha Theta has allowed my leadership abilities and commitment to advocacy work to grow.
