"I did my Bachelor's at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV! The experience left a lasting impression on me; not only were the faculty supportive and amazing, the community of peers around me were as well. I couldn't imagine myself being anywhere else."
Tina Do
English master's student in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
When I'm not writing (or procrastinating about writing), I am usually watching documentaries, reading about dinosaurs and going to spin classes. When it's not raining, I'll probably be out and about taking photos. I might have a mildly unhealthy obsession with Jeremy Wade's River Monsters and anything David Attenborough.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?
I did my Bachelor's at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV! The experience left a lasting impression on me; not only were the faculty supportive and amazing, the community of peers around me were as well. I couldn't imagine myself being anywhere else.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?
I am exploring diversity in contemporary publishing and making note of trends that have occurred within the last few years—particularly the spike in Black authors being published and Black characters being included in works, as well as in sales of literature that centre the Black voice or experience following the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020. I am interested in seeing how the industry is interacting with social movements and what other minority groups are experiencing in contemporary publishing as well.
WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?
The courses have been pretty stellar; they're challenging in the best of ways and offer up new information and avenues of thinking. I also love being able to connect with other students in my department and chat through the walls of our offices, or in passing in the hallways. The view doesn't hurt either.
HAVE YOU BEEN THE RECIPIENT OF ANY MAJOR OR DONOR-FUNDED AWARDS? IF SO, PLEASE TELL US WHICH ONES AND A LITTLE ABOUT HOW THE AWARDS HAVE IMPACTED YOUR STUDIES AND/OR RESEARCH.
I've received a Graduate Fellowship, a SSHRC CGS Award, the Temple Maynard Graduate Scholarship, and a Travel and Research Award. ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV has also given me the amazing opportunity to be a Teaching Assistant. As the first person in my family to even go to university, receiving these awards has made it possible for me to complete my graduate studies and pursue my academic interests.
