Gerontology doctoral student in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

Shreemouna Gurung is a PhD student at the department of Gerontology at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV. She is interested in employing a critical lens to understand the challenges experienced by long-term care staff when providing care to ethnically diverse older adults. Through the use of critical lens, she hopes to improve care practices, programs, and services to better meet the needs of marginalized older adults in long-term care settings in Canada.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?

Shreemouna chose to pursue higher education because of the PhD in Gerontology program offered at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV. She was captivated by the prospect of gaining advanced research training in gerontology, along with the opportunity to learn about interdisciplinary approaches, qualitative method, and knowledge translation.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?

Shreemouna’s research focus is on examining care models that are effective in addressing the needs of ethnically diverse older adults in long-term care homes. Specifically, she is interested in understanding how holistic care approaches, such as relationship-centred care is adopted and sustained in an ethno-specific long-term care home.

WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?

Shreemouna enjoys and appreciates the opportunity to develop theoretical knowledge on topics related to gerontology, as well as gain skills and techniques that are foundational in conducting qualitative research.
