"The School of Public Policy is so well respected in Canada. [It] has an incredible faculty who I have a lot of respect and admiration for."
Priscilla Fisher
Public Policy master's student in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
I have a background in economics, and currently work in the ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Experimental Economics Lab running economics experiments. My research interests include labour market and welfare state issues, with a focus on benefit stigma. I am also a former hairstylist, and passionate about seeing more women in the skilled trades!
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?
The School of Public Policy is so well respected in Canada, so it seemed like a no-brainer. Plus Vancouver is an absolutely stunning place to live!
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?
My grandma regularly asks me what 'public policy' is - and most of the time I explain that it's related to government decisions. But it is so much more than that! It totally encompasses every aspect of our society and our day-to-day lives. Public policy is a great choice for people who want to make a difference in the world around them.
WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?
The School of Public Policy has an incredible faculty who I have a lot of respect and admiration for. Spending time with my professors and learning more about their research interests has definitely been a highlight!
HAVE YOU BEEN THE RECIPIENT OF ANY MAJOR OR DONOR-FUNDED AWARDS? IF SO, PLEASE TELL US WHICH ONES AND A LITTLE ABOUT HOW THE AWARDS HAVE IMPACTED YOUR STUDIES AND/OR RESEARCH.
I am the recipient of the Dean's Graduate Fellowship. This award has allowed me to focus on my program full-time, and has given me the space to commit to other activities such as being a student representative on a range of committees within the School of Public Policy and the Graduate Student Society. I am very grateful for the financial support I have received as an ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV student.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PROGRAM/POSTDOC POSITION TO SOMEONE STILL SEARCHING FOR A PROGRAM OR POSTDOC POSITION?
The Master of Public Policy is an intensive and incredibly practical program that will prepare you for a career in policy. You will have opportunities to collaborate on a broad range of projects and learn the inner workings of all levels of government.
