"Oreofe is as amazing as she is astute. She is passionate about issues of women and girls especially those in vulnerable communities; hence, why she worked with girls in the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Abuja, Nigeria. The impact of the commendable work she did for girls was evident in the manner they approached circumstances in their lives after learning from her.
I think it is also important to mention that Oreofe is an awe-inspiring person with amazing writing and communication skills. She is always an active member of whatever society she finds herself being a the purposeful individual she is. Oh and she is a great friend too!"

Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies master's student in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
Before becoming a masters student in Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV. I attended Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, Nigeria for my bachelor's degree in International relations and diplomacy. My core areas of interest are women's rights activism in Africa and the Middle East, Women refugees and migrants. I am very passionate about the intersection of religion, culture and feminism in Nigeria and other African countries. I am also very passionate about the discourse around the mental health of minorities and people of color because I believe that there is not enough representation in these spaces. Following the achievement of my masters degree, I look forward to working at shelters that are dedicated to minority women, women of color and migrant women. I'm also looking forward to utilizing my degree alongside additional learning and experience to be able to offer counseling and therapy to people of color.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?
I chose to come to ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV because following my extensive research for my course of choice in different countries and different universities, the course on offer at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV was the one that most aligned with my interests. The professors and members of faculty had areas of interest and expertise that intrigued me. I was also swayed by the fact that the program offered an intimate cohort size and a course intensive option. Also, when a University campus is on a mountain, how could I not be swayed by the idea of being in a space that has so much interaction with nature.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?
Learning a lot about how the world hates women, how this patriarchal capitalist society we live in is rigged in favour of men and the phenomenal women that actively do something about it through their lives, writing, activism etc. Also learning about how something as personal as one's sexuality is somehow translated into a tool for oppression.
WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?
The members of the faculty are extremely helpful. All the professors that I've encountered in the course of my program are really passionate about sharing knowledge and are invested in the progress of their students. The cohort size is intimate which allows great interaction and exchange of knowledge amongst the students.
HAVE YOU BEEN THE RECIPIENT OF ANY MAJOR OR DONOR-FUNDED AWARDS? IF SO, PLEASE TELL US WHICH ONES AND A LITTLE ABOUT HOW THE AWARDS HAVE IMPACTED YOUR STUDIES AND/OR RESEARCH.
Grace Woodsworth MacInnis Grad Award.
Being a recipient of this award, I'd say gave me peace of mind. It meant that I was walking into the first semester of this program that I had been looking forward to for years with nothing to worry about. It afforded me the opportunity to be able to focus solely on gaining knowledge and developing my interests by fully immersing myself in the course with the safety that I did not have to actively worry about the tuition for the semester.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PROGRAM/POSTDOC POSITION TO SOMEONE STILL SEARCHING FOR A PROGRAM OR POSTDOC POSITION?
This program gives you so much flexibility because you have the option for a course intensive option which means you don't feel the need to streamline into a research area. It also has a broad range of courses to choose from each semester which is amazing because there's always something new to interest you and something new to learn. The most supportive faculty that aids your learning in ways you could never imagine.
