"I have enjoyed every bit of my studies at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV. I enjoyed the opportunity to investigate a topic that is so dear to me and I enjoyed the guidance of my supervisor who was so generous in sharing her knowledge and expertise with me."
Bouchra Kachoub
Linguistics doctoral student in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
My name is Bouchra Kachoub and I recently completed my PhD degree in Linguistics.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?
I chose ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV because it was one of the few universities in North America that has a faculty member specializing in my field of study.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?
In my research, I examine the spread and use of English in the historically multilingual north African country of Morocco. I look at the domains where English is employed and try to understand why such language continues to grow in an environment that is linguistically saturated. By investigating the use of English in the Moroccan context, which is quite unique, I contribute to understanding the dynamics of the Expanding Circle of World Englishes.
WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?
I have enjoyed every bit of my studies at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV. I enjoyed the opportunity to investigate a topic that is so dear to me and I enjoyed the guidance of my supervisor who was so generous in sharing her knowledge and expertise with me.
HAVE YOU BEEN THE RECIPIENT OF ANY MAJOR OR DONOR-FUNDED AWARDS? IF SO, PLEASE TELL US WHICH ONES AND A LITTLE ABOUT HOW THE AWARDS HAVE IMPACTED YOUR STUDIES AND/OR RESEARCH.
I received numerous awards which have helped me immensely in focusing mainly on my studies. I received three Community Trust Endowment Funds , two Graduate Fellowship, a President's PhD Scholarship, and four Travel & Minor Research Awards.
