Wesley Romey
Mechatronic Systems Engineering master's student in the
I am a MASc student at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV. I completed my Bachelor's degree in Mechatronic Systems Engineering at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV. I returned to ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV to get a Master's degree so I can research hydrogen fuel cell fault diagnosis, involving machine learning and Kalman filtering.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?
I came to ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV because it was close to where I live and I figured the Mechatronic Systems Engineering program was interesting. I returned for my Master's degree because my supervisor recommended I work on his research team.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?
I research hydrogen fuel cell fault diagnostics. My main objective is to use machine learning to detect hydrogen leakage faults in fuel cells, which lead to oxygen starvation if left unaddressed. Additionally, Kalman filtering is used to enhance the accuracy of the "measurements", which are simulated using a software simulation.
WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV?
I enjoy challenging myself with new problems to solve and I enjoy working as a Teaching Assistant because I love guiding people in the right direction. I also enjoyed my work experience in the Mitacs Accelerate program. In this program, I learned various open-source soft ware to conduct multi-objective topology, material, and phase optimization on simple objects such as beams.
HAVE YOU BEEN THE RECIPIENT OF ANY MAJOR OR DONOR-FUNDED AWARDS? IF SO, PLEASE TELL US WHICH ONES AND A LITTLE ABOUT HOW THE AWARDS HAVE IMPACTED YOUR STUDIES AND/OR RESEARCH.
I have received several awards, all related to my studies and co-op experience. The main awards I received are my Graduate Fellowship ($3500), Key Big Data USRA ($4500), and NSERC Industrial Undergraduate Student Research Award ($4500). They were awarded to me for my academic excellence. The Graduate Fellowship was awarded by ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV whereas the other two awards were awarded as part of my Co-op program during my undergraduate degree. I was also placed on the Dean's Honour Roll and President's Honor Roll for several semesters.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PROGRAM/POSTDOC POSITION TO SOMEONE STILL SEARCHING FOR A PROGRAM OR POSTDOC POSITION?
My program is not a postdoc position. Mechatronic Systems Engineering is largely a "jack of all trades" program for software and engineering.
