Lecture Abstract
In this colloquium I will debate the hypothesis that democratization is the key to delivering economic growth and opportunities, public goods and service delivery. In this debate I will also address the following questions: Can Africa make poverty history? Why are countries rich in natural resources politically and economically dysfunctional? Do third party interventions (e.g. aid, military operations, election observers) support or hinder the global fight against poverty?

About the Speaker
Dr. Anke Hoeffler is from the Centre for the Study of African Economies at the University of Oxford. Anke Hoeffler's research interests are mainly in the areas of economic growth and the economics of conflict. She is also a senior associate member at the International Peace Research Institute Oslo where she participates in an interdisciplinary study of the relationship between development aid and civil war.
