Dr. Zabrina Brumme wins prestigious CAHR Excellence in Research award

March 29, 2023

The Canadian Association for HIV Research (CAHR) has awarded the 2023 CAHR - CANFAR Excellence in Research Award (Basic Sciences category) to Dr Zabrina Brumme, Faculty of Health Sciences professor and laboratory director for the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS.

Brumme is being recognized for her longstanding research on the evolution of the HIV virus, and how this information can be leveraged to design vaccines and curative strategies. Brumme is also being honored for investigations she led during the COVID-19 pandemic monitoring immune responses to SARS-CoV-2 vaccination in people living with HIV.

"As a Canadian HIV researcher and a member of CAHR for nearly 25 years now, I am deeply honoured to be receiving this prestigious recognition from CAHR and CANFAR," says Brumme. "However, I cannot take credit for this award alone. Over the course of my career I have had the support of outstanding mentors, colleagues and institutions, to whom I owe much of my success."

"Above all, I would like to thank the talented young scientists in my research group who drive the science forward, and all individuals living with HIV, who inspire our work."

Brumme will receive her award at CAHR’s 32nd Annual Canadian Conference on HIV/AIDS Research in Quebec City at the end of April.
