JOB OPPORTUNITY RESEARCH MANAGER - FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES

PROJECT OVERVIEW:

An experienced Research Manager is needed for a project funded by the Canadian Institutes of

Health Research (CIHR), COVID-19 and Indigenous public health sovereignty in British

Columbia: Addressing systemic inequity through community-driven solutions.

The Research Manager will be responsible for the overall management and coordination of the

project in collaboration with partner First Nations. The project will investigate the following:

COVID-19 Health Governance and Indigenous Territorial Integrity; Coordinating Crises

Responses: Climate change, wildfires, and COVID-19; and Indigenous Approaches to

Community Health Amidst COVID-19.

STUDY SUMMARY:

The main objective of this research is to produce and mobilize knowledge applying the

learnings from successful First Nations COVID-19 responses (those that produced better health

and health governance outcomes) to mitigate the spread of COVID and improve COVID-19s

detection and management for self-determined First Nation communities and populations. The

research questions guiding this work are:

1. How did First Nations respond to COVID-19, and did this response lead to greater

Indigenous decision making and territorial authority?

2. Have these Indigenous responses produced better health governance outcomes (or not)

and, if so, how?

3. Is Indigenous territorial integrity measurably better since COVID-19?

4. To what extent did lockdowns keep non-residents out of Indigenous lands?

The project includes a literature review of communicable diseases in Indigenous communities in

British Columbia, interviews and focus groups with partner First Nations communities, and

knowledge translation and dissemination activities.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Research Manager will help with the development of this CIHR project. This person will

work closely with the project team, Dr. Cliff Atleo, Dr. Dawn Hoogeveen, and Dr. Lyana Patrick,

as well as with First Nations partners around BC and a team of trainees. The applicant will work

under general supervision and will exercise initiative and manage priorities with respect to

deadline and workload planning. Indigenous applicants are strongly encouraged to apply.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Coordinate research, training, and knowledge mobilization efforts

2. Liaise with 間眅埶AV research supports (accounting, research services, ethics, Faculty of

Health Sciences administration) to address project needs

3. Prepare and run meetings, virtually and in person

4. Lead project management, including ethics applications and budgets

5. Write and design content for social media, website, partner communication, and grant

proposals to advance the project

QUALIFICATIONS:

Masters or PhD degree in a relevant field (Public Health, Indigenous Studies, Planning,

etc.)

Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and conflict management skills

Excellent interpersonal, communication (both oral and written) and presentation skills

Excellent project management skills

Experience working with Indigenous communities

ASSETS:

Lived Indigenous experience, with connections to and engagement with Indigenous

communities, organizations, and/or institutions

Interest and experience in collaborative community-based research

Ability to conduct qualitative analyses

COMPENSATION:

Compensation will be at a rate of $35 per hour + benefits for approximately 3 days per week for

1 year with possibility of extension.

WORK LOCATION: 間眅埶AV (Burnaby), flexibility for work from home/other

sites.
