Vancouver Infectious Diseases Centre (VIDC):

The Vancouver Infectious Diseases Centre (VIDC) is a medical and research centre that uses a multidisciplinary care model for the delivery of specialty health care providing expert, state-of-the art diagnosis and treatment of chronic infectious diseases and related conditions (including addiction and pain management), with a focus on HIV and HCV infections. VIDC particularly seeks to engage more vulnerable patients in a multi-disciplinary environment of health care. We provide peer-friendly education about disease, state-of-the-art antiviral medications and comprehensive support during and after treatment within an open, flexible and community-based holistic approach. Services are provided in English and French.

Job Responsibilities and Description:

VIDC is seeking a dynamic nurse to support our patient engagement initiatives in a fast-paced medical and research setting – with a specific focus on HIV, HCV, and other related health conditions. The LPN provides care to clients based on verifiable outcomes which can be managed by following an established plan of care or under the direction/supervision of the Medical Director.

Expectations and Tasks:

Clinical Tasks:

  • Assess and evaluate patients for HIV and HCV engagement and treatment
  • Make blister packs and dispense HCV treatment for patients and track treatment progress
  • Evaluate patients for potential participation in clinical trials and assist Clinical Research Coordinators in research-related procedures
  • Perform study-related procedures including, administration of study medications, phlebotomy, ECGs etc.
  • Perform Fibroscan testing for liver fibrosis assessments
  • Administer immunizations, and regular injections of vitamins or medications
  • Provide clinical support for vaccinations, physical assessments, STD screening/treatment, wound care and other nursing-related duties.
  • Provide clinical support to infectious disease specialists and Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Provide support to the Registered Nurse (RN) in interacting with community, academic, and governmental partners in promoting the mission of VIDC

Outreach Tasks:

  • Participant in the weekly HCV Support Groups and provide education on a health topic to patients
  • Participate in weekly Community Pop-Up Clinics (CPCs) to provide point-of-care HCV and HIV testing in the Downtown Eastside community and in other suburban areas within BC
  • Participate in HIV monthly educational workshops to provide education and testing in communities
  • Work closely with the Program Assistant to coordinate the details for Support Group, CPCs and other outreach events or health fairs
  • Assist patients with applications for: housing, nutrition, outreach resources etc.

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of other health care disciplines and their role in patient care
  • Demonstrated ability in dealing with a variety of situations and responsibilities requiring initiative, creativity and professional judgement
  • Knowledge and experience in providing culturally safe and competent care, specifically pertaining to marginalized and vulnerable populations
  • Ability to work in a community-based multidisciplinary environment
  • Experience working with HIV and HCV infected individuals and the vulnerable inner-city population
  • Bilingualism is an asset

Educational/Professional Requirements:

  • Graduation from a recognized program for Practical Nurses.
  • Current full practicing licensure with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of BC (CLPNBC).
  • Minimum 1 year of recent experience working as a Licensed Practical Nurse providing care in the community or acute care setting.
