This informational webpage provides details on ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Enterprise services that are commonly inquired about by faculty, staff, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and visitors, particularly those who are new to ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV. Adobe Products (Adobe Acrobat Pro, Adobe Creative Suite)

Verified faculty and staff, as per ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Human Resources, are entitled to a maximum of two installations, which can be utilized on personal or home devices, provided that they acquire an Adobe Enterprise ID. Detailed guidelines for Adobe products are available on the ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV ITS . Use your ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV personal account; sponsor (role) accounts are not applicable.

Step 1: Obtain ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Adobe Enterprise ID

A. Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat Pro, etc.) Named User License (NUL): There is a cost associated to a named user license (NUL) for Adobe CC.  

  • For Research purposes
    • Faculty: Please provide a GL code of your research account to FENV IT staff via fenv-it@sfu.ca.
    • Grad students: Please obtain written approval from your supervisor or principal investigator.  
  • For Administrative and Teaching purposes
    • Faculty/Grads/Staff: All Departmental administrative and teaching requests for this software must be approved by your unit manager.   

B. Acrobat Pro Named User License (NUL): If Acrobat Pro is necessary for your work, subscribe to the ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Acrobat Pro maillist by following the . Use your ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV personal account; sponsor (role) accounts are not applicable.

Step 2: Install Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop app

Install Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop app if not already installed.

  • Unmanaged computers: Download the Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop app from the and install it
  • Managed computers: Open Software Center (Windows PCs) or Managed Software Center (MACs) and find Adobe CC Desktop Applicatiton 2022 NUL for Staff and install it if it is not installed. Admin credentials are not required.

Step 3: Install Adobe apps via Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop app

Launch Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop app and sign in with the ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Adobe Enterprise account. Install Adobe apps via the Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop app. Admin credentials are not required.

¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Print  

¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Print is a service that allows ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV faculty, staff, and authorized individuals to print, scan, and photocopy documents. To determine your eligibility for ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Print, please contact your unit's Manager, Academic & Administrative Services (MAAS).

You can release your print job to any ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Printing device in three ways:

  • using a key fob
  • entering your computing ID username and password
  • entering your printing ID (To find your printing ID, visit >> Change Details >> Generate number if needed (image1)

Managed devices

¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Printers are already pre-configured.

Unmanged devices

To set up ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Print on your device, please visit and follow the instuructions.

Troubleshooting

If the PaperCut client login window (image2) does not pop up when submitting a print job from an unmanaged device, manually launch the PaperCut client and resent the print job

  • Windows PCs: Start >> PaperCut MF Client
  • MACs: Applications >> PaperCut MF Client

MFA  

¶¡ÏãÔ°AV’s Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) refers to using two or more independent items to verify your identity, typically something you know (i.e., your ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV computing ID and password) and something you have (i.e., a time-based code). Detailed instructions for ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV MFA is available .

Currently, MFA at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV is implemented for web applications that use ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV's Central Authentication Service (CAS) for authentication. You will be prompted for your MFA code when you sign into most web applications and/or services at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV, including:

CAS-PROTECTED WEB APPLICATIONS

  • go¶¡ÏãÔ°AV, Canvas
  • FINS, myINFO
  • ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Mail (via a browser)
  • Zoom
  • Microsoft 365 (via web portal)
  • SharePoint

  • ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Maillist (maillist.sfu.ca)
  • Research Ethics Application system (Kuali)

Note: Future services at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV will require you to be enrolled in MFA. More details will be announced with the new services.

MFA enrollment is required for the following ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV computing accounts:

  • Faculty and staff (including TAs and RAs)
  • New ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV students (required to enroll in MFA by the end of your first semester)
  • Sponsored accounts
  • Retirees

¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Wi-Fi  

It is recommended that students, faculty and staff use ¶¡ÏãÔ°AVNET-SECURE, the secure wireless network on campus. You also have access to wireless services at cooperating institutions in Canada, US, Asia and Europe using eduroam. Detailed instructions for ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Wi-Fi can be found on the .

Managed devices

¶¡ÏãÔ°AVNET-SECURE is already configured.

Unmanged devices

Please visit and follow their guideline for Wifi.

Troubleshooting

The majority of wireless incidents are resovled by (re)installing .

If you continue to experience frequent disconnects or slow wireless service, try the following suggestions to see if connectivity improves.

  1. Ensure you are using a valid ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV computing ID.
  2. Ensure all Operating System updates are installed.
  3. Ensure the latest wireless drivers are installed (MacOS includes drivers as part of the Operating System updates).  Drivers make a significant difference to the performance of your wireless connection. Please find the newest available driver for your wireless device from the vendor's website.
  4. Use devices that support at minimum WiFi 5 (802.11ac) on the 5ghz band.  See  to determine if you device supports WiFi 5.
  5. Disable any power saving features on the wireless card.
  6. Ensure you are connecting to the ¶¡ÏãÔ°AVNET-SECURE Network. Check out the setup instructions.
  7. If after following the above suggestions connectivity has not improved please email its-help@sfu.ca and provide:
    1. Your first and last name
    2. Your ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV computing ID
    3. Your wireless MAC address
    4. Your wireless IP address
    5. Your device type and Operating System version, for example iPhone running iOS 15.4, PC laptop running Windows 11, etc
    6. Building and room number where you are experiencing the connectivity issue
    7. The date and time(s) you are experiencing the connectivity issue
    8. What is the nature of the connectivity issue
      1. Are you able to connect to wireless and browse 
      2. Is the connection slow
      3. Does the wireless connection fail intermittently or totally
      4. Did you note others in the area experiencing the connectivity issue

Managed Devices at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV

Managed devices refers to desktops and laptops that are managed by ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV IT Services. Staff and faculty can enroll their enterprise devices into managed devices, to benefit from standards that ensure the device is secure, license compliant, connected to enterprise resources, and regularly updated and maintained. Managed devices can also be found in offices, lecture rooms, labs, and libraries on campuses. Detailed instructions for managed devices at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV can be found on the .

Log in: Use ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV computing ID and password. Only predefined users are allowed to log in to the FENV managed computers.

Remote Desktop: The RDP connection is NOT allowed by default. If needed, please contact FENV IT.

Applications: Please install or remove applications via Software Center (Windows PCs) or Managed Software Center /Self Service (MACs) if needed. This doesn’t require Admininistrator privileges.

Pre-installed*: MS Office 2021 LTSC, MS Teams, MS OneDrive, ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Print, PaperCut client, Google Chrome,

Best practices

We recommend keeping your OS and software up to date. Some updates are required and have specific deadlines. As the deadline approaches, users receive constant notifications through pop-up nag windows. You may not be able to close the nag window once the deadline has passed.

Deferred updates may be initiated during the login or logout process, which may take a significant amount of time. If you urgently need your computer for a presentation or an upcoming meeting, for example, these updates can be quite disruptive to your work. Therefore, we recommend that you perform updates during off-peak hours (ie, before you leave your office or during lunch break) to increase the security of your computer and avoid disruption to your daily operations.

We need your cooperation so that you can focus on your work while the ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV/FENV IT staff focuses on maintenance.

  • We recommend that you restart your computer everyday before leaving the office.
  • Leave your Desktop computers on overnight. Important updates may happen overnight.
  • Visit the Management Software Center (MACs) / Software Center (Windows PCs) regularly to check for necessary updates. Once you find the updates, update your computer at a time that works best for your schedule. The OS upgrade process may take up to an hour.

OPERATING SYSTEM UPDATES / UPGRADES

How do you know updates are available? You’ll see a red icon in System Preferences (image 1). Click the 'Apple' icon in the main menu >> General >> System Preferences >> Software Update. It will show you the current OS version, available OS version, days remaining to update, and deferred count (image 2).

If the OS update is referring to a minor changes (decimal OS version change, ie, OS 12.3 to 12.4), follow the instructions described . If the update is a major change (integer OS version change, ie, OS 12.3 to 13.1), follow the instructions described .

Microsoft Products (MS Office, MS OneDrive, MS Teams)

Microsoft 365 (formerly known as Office 365) is a collection of productivity tools that combines the commonly used Office apps (e.g., Word, PowerPoint and Excel) along with powerful collaboration services like Microsoft Teams, and OneDrive. Detailed instructions for Microsoft products can be found on the .

All current ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV faculty, staff and students are eligible to install Microsoft 365 for free on up to 5 individual-use devicessuch as laptop, tablet, or smartphone.

Note. The availability of the individual applications within M365 may vary, please refer to the application pages for more details on eligibility:

¶¡ÏãÔ°AV retirees, emeritus and adjunct professors are eligible for Office 365 online to help facilitate working with the University community. This furnishes all the Office services, but does not allow for downloadable desktop installs of Office. The Office suite is still available in a browser.

Managed devices

MS Teams, OneDrive, Office 2021 LTSC are already installed.

Unmanged devices

Computer Hardware Procurement

It is important that you consult with your FENV IT support team before making any PC purchases for academic or research purposes. For the best academic pricing and maximum systems compatibility at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV, selecting products from Dell's enterprise product lines, including Optiplex, Precision, and Latitude, is critical.

Non-Dell hardware and consumer-grade products may not be fully compatible with ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV managed systems and may require extensive manual deployment effort. This can cause unnecessary delays in setting up your new PC and could lead to potential issues down the line. Therefore, consulting with us before making any purchase can help to ensure that you are making a well-informed decision and that the hardware you choose is compatible. This will also help to ensure that you get the best hardware that will serve your academic or research needs efficiently.

Their enterprise product lines provide reliable, high-quality hardware that is compatible with ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV's managed systems. Mapping shared server space

Don't forget to turn on ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV VPN when you access ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV shared server space from off campus.

  1. In File Explorer, right click on This PC and click Map Network Drive.
  2. Enter the path of the network server space. Server path for each unit is available here: Dean's Office, ARCH, GEOG, SES. Select Reconnect at sign-in option if you want to connect to the drive everytime you sign in to the computer. If you're using non-managed computers, select Connect using different credentials option as well. Click Finish button. 
  3. Enter your ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV computing ID including '@sfu.ca' (ie., fenvit@sfu.ca) and password OK to map the network drive.

  1. In Finder, either click Command+K to bring up Connect to Server or click Go > Connect to Server.
  2. Enter the path of the network server space you’re trying to map and click Connect. Server path for each unit is available here: Dean's Office, ARCH, GEOG, SES.
  3. Enter your ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV computing ID including '@sfu.ca' (ie., fenvit@sfu.ca) and password OK to mount the network drive.

Solution for endpoint security (Anti virus software)

MANAGED DEVICES

Managed devices at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV are currently using an Endpoint Detection & Response (EDR) solution.

¶¡ÏãÔ°AV VPN

¶¡ÏãÔ°AV VPN is a way for faculty, staff and graduate students to remotely connect to ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV's internal network using a secure (encrypted) and private connection. ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV VPN provides access to ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV systems that are typically inaccessible while working remotely. To find detailed information, please visit .

To access ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV VPN, you will need:

  • An ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV account (faculty, staff or graduate students) that is enrolled in .
  • The free version of the FortiClient VPN app. See .
  • The connection settings listed below.
