Episode 61: Standard English in Canadian Postsecondary: Education student Ngoc Le shares her research about Vietnamese students' language experiences

On this episode, IDEAS invited Ngoc Le, a recent graduate from the Curriculum and Instruction master’s program at ԰AV with a focus on Equity Studies in Education. Ngoc Le examined Vietnamese students’ experiences of using English in Canadian postsecondary and in social contexts from the lens of racialization, critical language and race theory, and raciolinguistic ideologies. Her lived experiences, observations of other Vietnamese students’ use of English, the expectations regarding ‘standard English,’ and the perceptions of the students about their own English competency intrigued her interest to explore the topic further in her master’s program. Ngoc Le shares valuable observations from her research and offers suggestions about the implications of her findings for teaching and researching academic English.

Speaker Bio

Ngoc Le is a graduate from the Curriculum and Instruction master’s program with a focus on Equity Studies in Education. Her thesis describes Vietnamese students’ experiences of using English in Canadian postsecondary and social contexts from the lens of racialization, critical language and race theory, and raciolinguistic ideologies. The work aims to challenge the deficit narrative of Vietnamese students’ English, and promotes the respect and inclusion of different languages, cultures, and ways of making meaning in Canadian university. Ngoc also holds a master’s in Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies from ԰AV. She worked as teaching assistant in the Faculty of Education, and the Department of Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s studies, Global Humanities, and Indigenous Studies in the last 6 years. Her pedagogy values students’ multilingual and literacy abilities and sensitive to their cultural backgrounds.
