Advancement events


Building-openings and namings

Ceremonies and Events organizes events to celebrate ground-breakings, dedications, openings and naming ceremonies for new buildings and spaces on campus. These ceremonies recognize donors, architects, contractors, public officials and other major stakeholders involved in the project.


Donor Appreciation Reception

Every year, annual donors, leadership donors and planned giving donors are invited to a reception to meet and mingle, receive an update from the university and to hear how their contributions impact students and the community. The event provides an opportunity for the university to gratefully acknowledge, thank and appreciate donors.


Donor recognition events

Ceremonies and Events works closely with other campus units to plan events that acknowledge and celebrate major gifts made to the university.


President’s Distinguished Community Leadership Award

The President recognizes community leaders whose service and accomplishments are exemplary. Recipients are recognized annually with the President's Distinguished Community Leadership Award, presented at a formal dinner reception. 


President's Seasonal Reception

Hosted by ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV President Joy Johnson, the Seasonal Reception provides an opportunity for the president and university to recognize and thank ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV’s donors, government representatives and community partners for their ongoing support and to highlight and celebrate the university’s achievements over the year.

Alumni events


President's Alumni and Friends Receptions

As part of ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV's commitment to keep in touch with its graduates, the and Ceremonies and Events staff work together to create events to give alumni living locally, nationally and internationally the opportunity to gather to hear updates and news from ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV. These events are attended by the President and/or other senior university administrators. 


Outstanding Alumni Awards

Each year, ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV and the Alumni Association honour its most accomplished graduates with the . These graduates are nominated by alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends of the university. Since the awards were first introduced in 1983, the Outstanding Alumni Awards event has become one of ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV's most celebrated traditions.

External Relations events


Diwali Celebration

¶¡ÏãÔ°AV’s President hosts a Diwali celebration in Surrey annually to celebrate ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV’s initiatives in India and engagement with B.C.'s Indo-Canadian Community. The event also supports ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV student awards which offers students an opportunity to gain valuable experience by working and volunteering in cities and villages throughout India.


Government funding announcements

Ceremonies and Events collaborates with ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Government Relations and municipal, provincial and/or federal governments to host announcements of various funding and/or resources granted to the university. Media is also frequently involved in funding announcements.


President's Annual ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Surrey Gala Dinner

¶¡ÏãÔ°AV hosts this annual event to thank the community for its support and to provide an update on  latest activities and achievements.

University events


Convocation Ceremonies (Spring and Fall)

¶¡ÏãÔ°AV holds 12 ceremonies at its Burnaby campus each year. These ceremonies include the conferring of honorary degrees as well as academic degrees and feature the visually stunning procession of graduands, faculty and dignitaries across the reflecting pond and down the grand stairway to Convocation Mall, led by the world class .


ISC Honouring Feast

Ceremonies and Events collaborates with the to coordinate the Honouring Ceremony, a special event held each year to honour and celebrate Indigenous students in their degree completion at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV.


Convocation Appreciation

This annual event is an opportunity for the chancellor and president to thank the many faculty and staff members from across all campuses who work together to make Convocation a success. 


¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Awards Celebration

The ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Awards Celebration brings together faculty, staff, postdoctoral fellows, students and community members who have been the recipients of prestigious awards and honours in the previous years. Held at the Diamond Alumni Centre, this event is an opportunity to celebrate and recognize the very best of ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV.
