Studying in Canada

I am Required to Withdraw (RTW) from ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV. How will my academic standing of RTW impact my study permit conditions and my status in Canada?

Under the section 222, there are certain scenarios where a study permit can become invalid before its expiration date printed on the permit.

Your study permit will become invalid on the earliest of the following dates:

  • 90 days after you have completed your studies;
  • the day you are no longer enrolled at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV; or
  • the expiration day printed in your study permit.
  • This means when your academic standing changes to Required to Withdraw (RTW), you are discontinued and are no longer enrolled at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV. As a result, your study permit will become invalid. As a foreign national in Canada, you must have valid temporary resident status throughout your stay in Canada.

Review the information below to explore your options to change or extend your status in Canada before your study permit becomes invalid.

Change of status

To change and maintain your status in Canada as a temporary resident, you may apply for a or (if eligible), unless you will start at another institution. IRCC uses the  (UTC) as the time receipt of application submission, which differs from the BC time zone. Please ensure that your application must be received by IRCC before midnight on the UTC date when you receive your RTW notice from ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV.

By changing your status before your current study permit becomes invalid, you may remain in Canada on while your visitor record or work permit application is processed by IRCC. Note that you are not eligible to study or work during this period.

Transfer to another post-secondary institution

Starting November 8, 2024, if you are , you must apply for a new study permit in accordance with the new DLI change process announced by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

If you have been admitted to a new DLI, you should apply for a new study permit with a Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from your new DLI on the same day as you receive the RTW notice.

If you’re inside Canada and have a valid study permit (that is your study permit hasn’t become invalid), you can apply for a new study permit by extending your current one via . If you are eligible to apply for a study permit inside Canada, you can remain in Canada while the application is in process.

If you are outside Canada, you must apply for a new study permit from outside Canada and will need a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) from your new institution. You must have your study permit approved before you can begin your studies at the new school in Canada.

Restore your temporary resident status

On the day when your academic standing changes to RTW, your study permit will become invalid. If you did not leave Canada or did not apply to change your status (e.g. applying to extend your study permit with a LOA from your new institution, applying for a visitor record, or a work permit) before your study permit becomes invalid, you will lose your status as a student.

If you wish to remain in Canada, you may be eligible to apply to restore your student status along with a new application to change your status and or extend your stay in Canada. Your restoration application must be submitted in Canada within 90 days after your study permit becomes invalid. For more information about restoration and its eligibility criteria, please review IRCC’s webpage .

Return to Canada

You may also decide to leave Canada, or you may have already left Canada by the time you receive your RTW notice.

When you are ready to resume your studies, you must have a valid study permit or have been approved for a study permit to study at a designated learning institution in Canada. You must also have a valid or , if applicable, to facilitate your re-entry to Canada.
