Qualifications for TA Positions in the Department Of Mathematics
The Department of Mathematics includes a wide range of specializations. In order to be appointed, a person must have sufficient working knowledge in the discipline of the course to interpret the course material as demonstrated by either having completed an advanced course in the subject area from an undergraduate or graduate degree, or through graduate-level research in the subject area; ability to explain course concepts; demonstrated competence in English oral and written communication skills.
TAs must be available to invigilate exams.

Teaching Assistant /Tutor-Marker Hiring Priorities (July 7, 2016)
Priority for appointment/reappointment as a Teaching Assistant is in accordance with Article XIII of the Collective Agreement with the Teaching Support Staff Union (TSSU).
Priority for appointment/reappointment as a Tutor-Marker is in accordance with Article XV of the Collective Agreement with the Teaching Support Staff Union (TSSU).
In hiring Teaching Assistants, the Mathematics Department gives priority to applicants in the following order:
1. Qualified graduate students registered in the Mathematics Department.
2. Qualified graduate students registered in other departments.
3. Qualified Undergraduate Teaching Assistants (UTA) or qualified External Teaching Assistants (ETA).
In allocating Teaching Assistant/Tutor-Maker positions, the department will also take into account the following:
- instructor requests;
- applicant’s preferences;
- amount of financial support offered on admission to the graduate program;
- suitability for particular courses (e.g. discipline of prior degree(s), publications, experience);
- employment evaluations;
- number of base units already received to ensure sufficient teaching related experience in her/his field of study can be acquired.
If an assignment within a priority group requires a selection between applicants, the graduate student without financial support from merit based scholarships or merit based fellowships during the semester of appointment with a value equal to at least a 5.17 appointment, will have priority for the appointment.

Teaching Assistant Pay Rates
- Teaching Assistant salary per Base Unit [BU]:
- $1,242
- Associated scholarship per Base Unit [BU]: (does not apply to the 0.17 or 0.05 unpaid prep time)
- GTA1 (MSc): $190
- GTA2 (PhD): $420

TA office/contact hours will be remote and F2F. Marking will be remote. F2F responsibilities will include quiz, midterm & final exam invigilation & scanning. F2F responsibilities can be scheduled into 1-2 days per week based on TA coursework and availability.

Qualifications for Sessional Instructor Positions in the Department Of Mathematics
- An MSc in Mathematics or Applied Mathematics or a related field, and deep knowledge of and experience with the course content.
- Teaching experience at the post-secondary level (teaching a course or a tutorial in a mathematics course).
- Applicants for MATH 150 ideally have experience with organizing peer mentor groups.
- Sessional Instructors at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV are members of the TSSU Bargaining Unit.
- Positions are subject to enrollment and budgetary constraints.
Sessional Instructor Salaries
Salary: May 1, 2024 to April 30, 2025 $1816 per weekly contact hour
Effective May 1, 2024 with a 1.87% General Wage Increase
