SPRING (1251) TEACHING ASSISTANT (TA) POSITIONS
The Department of Chemistry is accepting applications for the courses listed in the table below.
Applications are open until 14th November 2024
All interested applicants are encouraged to apply; number of base units already received does not affect eligibility criteria.
Spring 2025 course delivery: All appointments will require face-to-face instruction. If you have concerns about the safety measures in place for face-to-face instruction, please review Safety and Risk Services Work & Research Safety.
Spring (1251) Classes begin on Monday, 6th January 2025 .

Applicants are expected to be available for the entire term of the contract: 30th December 2024 25th April 2025
繚 You must discuss any planned absences with the course instructor in advance, who will determine if an exception is possible.
繚 If you are taking courses or have other restrictions on your time, please be sure to contact the course instructor before applying to ensure you understand the requirements of the TAship and are available when the job requires.
繚 TAs must be available to invigilate exams and TMs must be able to collect exams and course work for marking, and return (once marked).
繚 In addition, applicants should provide details of any merit based scholarships or merit based fellowships for which they are expecting to receive in the upcoming term.
繚 All successful applicants must demonstrate completion of the required safety training prior to the start of the course. Safety training requirements for each course are listed here. Retraining is not required if certification is still valid.

Qualifications for TA/TM positions in the Department of Chemistry
The Department of Chemistry includes a wide range of specializations and, in order to be appointed, a person must have sufficient knowledge in the discipline of the course to interpret the course material, as demonstrated by either having above average performance in an equivalent or related course from an undergraduate or graduate degree, or through graduate-level research in the subject area.
Teaching Assistant Hiring Priorities
Priority for appointment/reappointment as a Teaching Assistant is in accordance with Article XIII of the Collective Agreement with the Teaching Support Staff union (TSSU).
In allocating Teaching Assistants, the department will also take into consideration the following:
- Suitability for particular courses (e.g. discipline of prior degree(s), publications, experience)
- Requests for a position in a specific course or at a preferred campus
- Number of base units already received to ensure sufficient teaching-related experience in his/her field of study
- Employment evaluations
- Instructor requests
If an assignment within a priority group requires a selection between applicants, the graduate student without financial support from merit based scholarships or merit based fellowships during the semester of appointment with a value equal to at least a 5.17 appointment, will have priority for the appointment.
