The School of Resource and Environmental Management invites applications for the following Sessional Instructor positions:

Teaching Support Staff Union (TSSU)

SD 401 Sustainable Development Studio
Location:
Burnaby Campus
Appointment Dates:
May 12 to August 22, 2025
Lectures:
Wednesdays, 4:30 pm to 8:20 pm
Salary:
$ 9,534.00 for 4 weekly contact hours

Course Description: Engages students in creating innovative solutions to real-world challenges of sustainability and development, using studio-based approaches. Explores mechanisms for effective social and environmental change and develops policies and strategies for implementing sustainability in different locations and at different scales.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree, PhD preferred; ABD candidates will be considered.
  • Knowledge of the following topics:
    • Sustainable development at the global scale; how to cultivate a more sustainable world; cases of governance, programs and policies in the Global South that foster the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in areas such as food and water security, biodiversity, inclusive economies, and clean energy. 
  • Relevant experience in teaching / research related to the principles, policies and practices of Sustainable Development and/or International Development.
  • Experience with experiential and /or case-based learning preferred. 
  • Evidence of teaching experience and excellence (i.e., student reviews, other references)

REM 221 Systems Thinking and the Environment – 1 TA Position
Compensation: 3.17-4.17 BUs: $4,508-$5,940 (GTA1)/ $5,198-$6,860 (GTA2)
Location: Burnaby Campus (In person)
Duration: January 6 to April 30, 2025
Instructor: Brett van Poorten
Qualifications:
Knowledge of concepts associated with systems thinking (e.g., stocks, flows, feedbacks, equilibria) as applied to environmental and social systems. Awareness of how these concepts have been used to build complex environmental constructs such as resilience and anarchy. Preference will be given to applications with demonstrated application of skills through modelling. Experience with Excel and a systems software such as InsightMaker, Vensim, or Stella are an asset.

REM 325 Uncertainty, Risk, and Decision Analysis – 1 TA Position (1-2 Tutorials, Pending Enrollments)
Compensation: 2.17-3.17 BUs: $3,076-$4,508 (GTA1)/$3,536-$5,198 (GTA2)
Location: Burnaby Campus (In person)
Duration: January 6 to April 30, 2025
Instructor: Kyle Wilson
Qualifications: 
Must have a good working knowledge uncertainty in social-ecological systems, quantitative decision analysis, basic rules of probability (including conditional and marginal probability), and excellent communication skills. Academic or equivalent work experience with MS Excel is also required.
