The Conference

The conference presents papers on various topics related to the cult of the Virgin, including the emergence of her cult in the Eastern Mediterranean, aspects of its development, as well as local traditions associated with Mary. Particular attention will be paid to Coptic, Syriac, Aramaic and other previously neglected textual and art historical material.

In history, the Virgin Mary has always been a vehicle for the expression of theological concerns, imperial politics, perennial rituals and piety. In modern times, the cult of Mary, originally stemming in the East Mediterranean and gradually spreading in East and West throughout the Christian era, mirrored historical circumstances and accompanied people in their public and private life. This project encompasses both scholarly research of the sources, as well as a collection of ethnographical material on the cult of the Virgin encountered in various areas of the Greek world and beyond.

The conference will contribute to the growing field of Marian studies with new material and perspectives and that it will offer scholars working on the Virgin the possibility of a lively discussion on aspects of her cult, associated rituals and devotion.
