¶¡ÏãÔ°AV student gets a behind the scenes look into the world of philanthropy
Ever wonder what a career in philanthropy might be like? This past fall, one lucky student got that opportunity as ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV’s representative to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Internship Program.
The SNF Centre for Hellenic Studies has been incredibly fortunate to be able to nominate a ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV student to participate in the programme at the Foundation’s Athens office over the fall semester and we have just recently welcomed back the latest intern, fourth-year Kyra Mainer, who is pursuing a major in English, an extended minor in French, and a Hellenic Studies Certificate.
This fall I had the opportunity to intern with the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. It was an absolute pleasure to work in such a friendly and supportive environment with so many experienced and talented officers. Working alongside my fellow SNF interns, I got to learn about the experiences, interests and beliefs of people my age in Greece, (as well their taste in drinks and cheese pies). As an intern in the Programs Department, I got to see a side of Greece not experienced by most tourists, and see Athens, not only as a city rich in history and culture, but as a modern political capital which hosted both US Secretary of State Pompeo and Chinese President Xi Jinping over the course of my stay.

Every year, the offers a limited number of internships to qualified candidates interested in exploring the world of philanthropy and not-for-profit organizations. Interns gain insight into the operations of a philanthropic organization and get hands-on experience with the work of different grantees working in the areas of arts and culture; social welfare; education; and health and sports.
The internship occurs in the Fall at the Foundation’s offices in Athens, Greece and lasts for approximately four to eight weeks. While knowledge of the Greek language is helpful, it is not required, as the work of the intern is performed in English. Travel and accommodation are included and a modest stipend is provided.
Applications for Fall 2020 are now open, you can find application and eligility details here.
