Placement Test

Placement tests will take place online.

IMPORTANT:

The French Department is revampling its programs and courses.

The NEW SEQUENCE of lower-division language courses is:

FREN 101 > FREN 102 > FREN 201 > FREN 202

FREN 101 replaces FREN 120/121

FREN 102 replaces FREN 122

FREN 201 replaces FREN 210

FREN 202 replaces FREN 211

BC grade 12 French immersion students or students with FREN 211 or above may enroll directly into FREN 245, FREN 275, FREN 300, FREN 301W, FREN 302, FREN 303, FREN 330 or FREN 352.

**Please contact the Academic Advisor (frenadv@sfu.ca) to determine your correct course placement or if you have any questions.**

STUDENTS QUALIFYING IN THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES NEED NOT COMPLETE THE PLACEMENT TEST BUT SHOULD ENROLL IN THE COURSE INDICATED BELOW.

  • BC grade 12 French immersion: enroll in FREN 245, REN 275, FREN 300, FREN 301W, FREN 302, FREN 303, FREN 330 or FREN 352
  • BC grade 12 French with a grade of A: enrol in FREN 202
  • BC grade 12 French: enroll in FREN 201
  • BC grade 11 and no other French courses: enroll in FREN 102
  • BC grade 10 French or under, or no French at all: enroll in FREN 101

ALL OTHER STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THE PLACEMENT TEST, INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING:

  • Francophone programme, IB and AP students
  • student who have completed high school in a Francophone educational system in a Francophone country or province
  • college/university transfer students with transfer units in French
  • students from other provinces or countries
  • students who have completed any credit/non-credit French course of six or more weeks duration since high school
  • students who have lived (minimum 30 months) in a Francophone environment
  • special cases and any students seeking advice on eligibility to earn challenge credit
