As a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, you may be worried about the health and safety of yourself or your family and friends. This is a challenging and uncertain time. It is not uncommon to experience higher levels of stress and feelings of being overwhelmed. If this is your experience, please seek help and support.

Counselling and other supports are available to members of our campus community. We encourage students who need support at this time to contact one of the following services:

If you are concerned that you have COVID-19, please follow the following steps:

  • If you have access to the internet, use the BC Ministry of Health's COVID-19 Symptom Self-Assessment Tool
  • If you do not have access to the internet, please contact the provincial health line at 8-1-1 for guidance.
  • If you live in Residence, email Residence and Housing at housing@sfu.ca. Residence and Housing will provide further information and support.
  • Contact your instructors to let them know.  Should you have concerns about the response, contact the Chair or Director of the Department or School (or for Continuing Studies, write learn@sfu.ca). Finally, if needed, contact the Dean's office.

To graduate students in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

We understand your concerns about the impact of COVID-19 on your health, that of others, and on your education. As you may have heard, ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV has moved away from in-person instruction starting Monday, March 16.

If you are currently registered in classes, you will receive further information from your instructors on next steps. For information on how to access support services for students, go to

If you are currently a TA or TM for any class, you will receive further information from the course instructor on how the class will proceed.

If you are currently working as an RA, please contact your research supervisor for further direction on how to proceed with the research.

Likewise, for any thesis-related research, please get in touch with your senior supervisor for how best to address research and degree completion. We believe ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV will also be addressing degree completion for graduate students in the coming days or weeks.

To faculty members and instructors in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

If you are returning from outside Canada please self-quarantine for 14 days before returning to work. Work from home may be an option provided the work can be performed at home. Please discuss this option with your supervisor. If you are ill, follow the medical leave protocol as you would normally do.

Further guidelines regarding staff work arrangements are being developed by ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Senior Administration and will be shared as soon as they are available this week.
